[#13536031]

We work outdoors with schools so all travel and delivery on Wednesday and Thursday is cancelled.

Apart from self-important me who has a conference speaking event on climate adaption of schools on Thursday. In central London. With train home to Scotland. Yeah. Not looking forward to that.

I'm betting we see a lot of school closures, hospitals cancelling appointments etc.

And of course.

All DoE expeditions run by Carmarthenshire due to take place this week have been postponed.

Avoid the tube.

Take a vest and the loosest shorts you can find, with your smart clothes in a bag, and pedal very gently around on a hire bike or electric scooter if they have them down there.

I am lucky to be getting a new specialized epic comp ht this week. I may pick it up after the heatwave though as I have to ride home. Stay safe in the heat everyone.

100+km overnighter over the high point of the Pennines for me! It'll be fine, I'm taking two bottles of water rather than my usual one.

Weeks like this, end of May and the two heatwave weeks in July '22 are nothing like I grew up with in various counties in England, before moving down south to Hampshire in '92. 20C was a nice summer's day.

Most summers down here have been a fraction warmer, but the last four have been off the scale.

Very fortunately, we happen to be on holiday on IOW this week and it's so much comfier than our home furnace flat will be again. Still makes holiday exploring by foot in a hilly area even more challenging.

Stay safe everyone!

Paah, it's just summer. Was hotter when I was a lad. Thames used to be frozen. It's just Miliband and contrails.

Have I won the bingo game yet?

We're going to have to start putting a price/cost on these things as they become more frequent aren't we. Its a few days inconvenience I guess for us but costed across the country theres a loss of productivity thats not going to be insignificant. Was listening to a thing on radio 4 recently where it was being suggested that increased episodes of extreme heat was on track to be costing India 40% of its GDP in lost productivity.

I keep seeing people go "it's just summer!" and "Just like '76!" on the old socials. 1 - They remember '76 because it was abnormal for the time, and 2 - '76 saw a hottest day of 36 degrees, we're now seeing hottest days of 40 degrees. Insane how blind we broadly all are to this.

Its ironic that theres legislation to ban social media for the under 16s when the biggest spreaders and swallowers of online misinformation are the over 60s 🙂

These "once in a lifetime" freak heatwaves are starting to happen awfully frequently...

I do notice how even the most ardent of climate change deniers on my social media feed are notable by their silence right now...

Today wasn't too bad - I worked on my allotment all afternoon and I'm alive. Our Wildlife Trust volunteer session for Thursday has been cancelled though.

My worry is that London is predicted 40*c air, but add in some direct sunshine, humidity and heat island effect, Thursday is going to be ugly...

Kids' schools closed Wednesday and Thursday, I don't think they have a choice once a red weather warning is issued.

It hit 40 degrees in 2022 but only forecast to be 38 this week. The scientists are lying, anyone with common sense will see that we can expect freezing heatwaves by 2100.

The UK's infrastructure isn't remotely designed for this sort of thing, it puts huge stress on the road and rail network. Tar starts melting, rails warp, houses (many of which were never designed with air con in mind because who needs air con in the UK, you need central heating!) become unbearably hot.

And then you get a massive thunderstorm and everything floods.

🙄

Thankfully the train back is Friday morning, so I'm hoping things might be calming down by then... I'm planning on getting the early/dawn train up to London in a hope I'm a ahead of chaos....

Woke up to an ongoing thunderstorm this morning down in Hastings. It's cleared the air a fair bit.

Not looking forward to the heat ramping back up again, though.

I'm building a garden room this week on my own, yesterday was hot, I'm not looking forward to later in the week!

My youngest lads school has already cancelled his sports day on Thursday. No mention of closing the school as of yet.

I looked up how hot it was in Midlothian/Edinburgh in 2022 and was surprised to see it was only(!) 30°c.  I remember it as my van was in the garage so I luckily didn't have to try and work in it.  But I could've sworn it was hotter.

Wife's school is closing at lunchtime for pupils, staff are expected to stay but provision made for those with south facing classrooms, etc.

As the school runs a 4 lesson day, it means one lesson a day is actually being missed which sounds pretty pragmatic. Of course, means kids are going home at 1300 ish, and some parents have to slightly change their plans so it's an absolute disaster (spoiler, having kids might occasionally disrupt your lives) but most are local and walking distance and if they can't make it back 15 minutes or so then they can stay and do homework until end of the official day.

My place is open today but closed for non-essential staff tomorrow and Thursday, WFH instead, but mainly so any air-con / LEV can be focused on the labs where kit has to remain running rather than any great fear we were all going to die.

Flipping trains are cancelled in Manchester - it's not going to be that hot. The down side is I've had to drive as daughter needs a lift into Uni as she's booked out an animation studio for her MSc !  I'll be driving tomorrow too.  Can ride Thursday.

There was a research paper by the Met office about heatwaves and the chances of getting a 40°C recorded temp in the UK about 6 years ago. They said it was very unlikely and calculated it had a return period of ~1000 years.

Then it happened and they did another paper taking into account a better view of the current climatology (i.e. including climate change to date). The revised study calculated it was more like 100 year return period. The very scary thing is that as time goes by the impact of climate change will make it even more likely.

Climate deniers like return periods as they are just statistical calculations and as we know you can prove anything with statistics.

You can .... like the correlation between rabid right wing morons on marches and domestic abuse.

Stats can be useful at times

Luckily I’m now working part time, meaning I don’t have to work this week in my ‘scorchio’ attic workroom.

I once ended up steam ironing heavy linen curtains and their linings in 30o heat. Sweat was rolling into my eyes. Even having the windows open did little to help with the heat.

Temperate west central Scotland here so low 20’s so far.  Not long in from an extended dog walk, as he’ll not be out in the heat over the middle of the day.

Me, I’ll be off to David Lloyd just after 9 for my regular 2.5k swim session in the outdoor 25m pool, mornings like this make the exorbitant membership fee worthwhile !

Ain’t retirement great 😊

I don't mind the heat so much though obviously it kind of depends on what you have on your agenda. I mostly work from home on a laptop so can't really complain too much.

Even the really intense 35+ spells here seem to only last a few days or a week at most? I feel like its not that bad for a short period but if we had prolonged spells of these kind of temperatures for weeks or months I guess I would find that quite oppressive.

Scheduled to go road cycling tomorrow at 7pm but I'm in Manchester so think it will be about 32degrees then. Trying to convince my mates to opt for a flat easy ride but they seem keen on suffering up a load of hills for some reason.

Only had the thunderstorms at a distance so havent slept well and now its muggy/hot as ****. Storms did sound on the rather heavy side.

Am debating going to the local(ish) office to see how good their air con is.

Manchester edge of the Peak, just on the fringes of Hotmageddon territory. Out with the dog at 5.30am as he doesn't do well with temperatures much above 20˚C. It was, in honesty, brilliant, shady riverside walking with a welcome absence of the hordes of untrained feral cockadoodlepoos and reactive chihuahuas that infest the High Peak. Now hibernating, the both of us...

Quite happy if this is as hot as it gets for me here. Living up here and not being acclimatised to anything warmer, I probably cope worse with 25*C than southerners do in 35*C 😀

TBH here in Leeds its only going to be 31 tops, so I'm not really bothered. Yeah its hot, but it's not that bad. Daughter is allowed to wear PE kit to school instead of the normal stupid uniform, so thats a bit better for them.

I'm working downstairs so I can have the back door open, peak heat will be just as I'm knocking off according to BBC weather, and the sun is keeping the hot tub nice and warm!

Its the heat during the night that gets to me rather than in the day time.

Let's overlook the fact that it's a map of France

Let's also overlook what's actually happening in France.

https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/temperatures-exceed-40c-european-heatwave-three-die-france-2026-06-22/

At least 18 people died in France, including two children left in a hot car, as a heatwave hung over Europe, smashing temperature records in several cities on Monday.

The temperature in Bordeaux in France's western wine country rose to 41.9 degrees Celsius (107.4 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking a record set last August.

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/environment/article/2026/06/23/france-faces-unprecedented-heatwave-we-are-about-to-experience-four-of-the-hottest-days-ever-recorded-in-the-country_6754769_114.html

"We are about to experience four days, from Monday to Thursday, that will rank among the hottest ever recorded in France," warned Sébastien Léas, a forecaster at the national institute. "It's rare, especially so early in the year," added his colleague, climatologist Christine Berne. Purple, a color rarely seen before on the Météo-France maps, has now appeared and is signaling temperatures of 40°C to 42°C, which will hit a large swath of western France, from the Aquitaine basin to the Loire Valley, on June 23.

And overlook the bit where they're worried about breaking the 46deg record, not the 32deg one from 1976?

It’s the heat during the night that gets to me rather than in the day time.

gets to our housing stock too. Down here we are looking at 3 days where nighttime temperatures never go below 22.

masonry cavity walls are big thermal masses and will really heat up with nowhere for it to go.

This is possibly the single dumbest meme on the Internet.

The French would be absolutely delighted with 32C, rather than temps which are up to 10C higher.

18 people have died due to the heat.

TBH you’re not equipped for it(but your holiday location is 🙂 ), no AC or shuttering and also it’s relatively rare so putting something off for a few days isn’t a big deal.

Living up to my username stuff can go well south if your outside overdoing it on your bicycle with not enough  water or shade,It’s a YMMV  🙂

Isn't the problem more to do with solar gain?  Cavity walls still insulate you both ways, a single skin would absorb and transfer even more heat.

The problem is we like big windows, which aren't a problem by themselves but we don't pair them with balconies, shutters etc to keep the heat out during the day.  Whether we need to is a different matter, these hot spells are becoming hotter, but it's still usually only 2-3 non consecutive week a year, not worth ripping down and rebuilding all our housing stock over (although right now I'm questioning the decision to build our new extension with ~4m of sliding door and roof lights).

Yes its ironic that people can tolerate a bit more heat when their main exertion is picking what flavour of ice cream to have.

No one wants to go to a place that is 40C.  I was in Crete last year and it hit 41C.  It was absolutely hellish, even the locals were complaining it was too hot.  it cooled down to a pretty tolerable 33C which was better.  I had a paddleboard and the sea to cool off in too.

I used to live in Australia, we learned how to deal with heat in school, there were national ad campaigns on how to help deal with the heat (Slip, Slap, Slop) and lots of people had their own pools and or air con. Even then 40C was horrible.

You should come up to the edinburgh office. Its horrendous over about 25degrees outside.
