We've had a quote to take about 6ft off the top of a 20ft leylandii (sp?) hedge. The hedge is about 30ft long.

The quote is about £600, which has surprised me a bit (not that I had any idea how much it might be beforehand). We'll get another couple of quotes, but does that feel like it's in the right ball park?

Do it yourself. It is almost impossible to kill the bloody things. While you are at it take the remaining 12ft down too.

£600 does sound steep though for what should be a few hours of relatively unskilled labour. If it was a more complicated planting in the hedge then maybe, so long as they disposed of everything and left the site pristine.

Just how complicated is it? Any green houses underneath? I paid £120 for a very complicated job on a bigger tree a couple of years back. A green house didn't,t help but it all ended up on the lawn. The brush was burnt and the big stuff is going on the stove next winter.

The price will depend on access, ground conditions etc.

Don't underestimate the price of waste disposal either, my business pays £25 per ton.

Obviously depends how dense your conifers are as to how much waste there will be.

Is the quote from insured tree surgeons,

I pay silly amounts for insurance.

Post a pic?

How deep is the hedge? I do an almost identical job every 2 years, charge £280. Takes 4nrs plus a trailer of waste, 30ft long and 20ft high down to 15. It's 10ft deep. 600 is an actual piss take.

#edit, from the photo, def an easy job. My 4hr job is a one-man affair. Get a grounds contractor, not a tree surgeon.

Maybe 15ft, not 20. It's about 4ft deep Max.

It was a quote from a pukka tree surgeon (Bartletts, we're in Cirencester)

I did 28 trees in a weekend with a rented chainsaw on my own

Only managed to break 3 ribs in two places when I tripped over one stump and landed on another. I would have tried to break my fall but I was holding a revverd up chain saw at the time.

Drop me an email if you want help or advice
