@zilog agreed I was just trying to point out that every Apple product doesn't have to a first.
Hasn't it become accepted that Apple is just a refinement company?
@cougar - yes you can "roll" the crown with one ringer, at least that what I believed I saw in the video
So it's a non-issue anyway then.
I haven't seen the press release video thing, but what does Applepay do? Are there not already NFC payment solutions out there? I don't use anything that can do this (although my phone does have NFC) but I assume 'virtual wallets' do exist? Or not? Google Wallet rings a bell.
Is Applepay just using NFC to pay for stuff? Presumably it requires tie-in from banks and/or shops?
Basically. It's tied in with Passbook (their digital wallet) and I believe it will require TouchID (fingerprint recognition) on iPhone. They have plenty of banks/shops on board already in the US (it launches next month); no word on UK yet though.

This is what makes Apple so successful.
Google built an OS that can comunicate with an NFC chip. Android hardware manufacturers put NFC chips in all their phones. Whoop Whoop. They have a line on a spec sheet that helps them sell their phones.
But they forgot that people actually needed a way to use the thing.
For Apple putting the NFC chip in the phone was only a tiny piece of the puzzle. They've also developed a way use it. At launch Apple Pay will work with loads of banks, all the major credit cards and 220,000 retail stores (in the USA). So at launch a large slug of users will be able to buy the phone and then imediately pop to Target, Walgreens, McDs or Starbucks and pay with the thing.
Being apple they have done this in a walled garden kind of way that will piss some people off but the it's the fact that they have done it at all that makes things actually work. This means that both Android and iPhone users will have NFC chips in their phones but a much higher proportion of iPhone users will actually use them.
The same is true of apps. In theory Android offers so many more possibilities and freedoms to app developers but iPhone users actually buy and use a much higher number of apps because Apple put the extra effort into ensuring they are good.
In a sense it's nothing new (though it does have some good security features and the tinfoil hat brigade will like that Apple don't actually sees what you're buying, compared to say Google's system) as usual but again as usual, Apple have the clout to make it happen and that's what's key. Shops will actively want to have Apple Pay as an option. The interesting part is kind of what will eveyrone else do as I assume android won't play with Apply Pay (iPay?) so will there need to be multiple payment options, a little like Visa and Mastercard but maybe with non-compatible hardware...

Google wallet is compatible with MasterCard pay pass system so is available in most of the stores you mentioned.
Isn't google wallet US only (for physical payments at least)
a little like Visa and Mastercard but maybe with non-compatible hardware...
NFC is the same as the contactless chip in your credit card. Lots of retailers already have the hardware.

Weird that more people don't use it then. If I had an adroid phone could I just download google wallet, input the details of my mastercard and start paying for things with my phone instead of my contactless master card?
It is. So will apple's new payment service at 1st. Hopefully google will roll it out to other territories now.
jfletch & nemesis - that's what I thought it might be. Apple having the clout to push something through and get people on board.
I have to say that I am not convinced it is massively useful in the UK at the moment (and perhaps the rest of Europe?). I have an NFC payment thing in my bank card, but rarely think to use it and then when I do think about it, the place doesn't have the readers to accept them anyway so I just use Chip & Pin.
But perhaps in a year or two it will become more widespread now Apple have jumped on board.
google wallet is US only at the moment, it does visa too but its been around for a few years
my nexus 4 sometimes makes an nfc noises when its next to my credit card though!

@stumpy Apple Pay is more than just the Near Field part. Its also a way of encoding your credit card details securely into the special chip (including by pointing the camera at the card) and then paying for things on multiple websites/apps. Its a "total" payment system.
FWIW I have started using NFC payments where I can after barman in pub pointed out that it's more secure than chip/pin. I will definitely use it on my phone. Apple is very smart as for each payment they will get a fee from the card company and perhaps even from the app provider. Big $$$ potential.
If it meant not needing to carry cards (or maybe just one just in case), that'd be a great.
As I said earlier in the thread, I'm fairly sure I'll never buy an Apple product so I won't be using iPay but this will force the alternatives (Wallet, etc) to up their game which is why what Apple does is always interesting.
This is a very good point!FWIW I have started using NFC payments where I can after barman in pub pointed out that it's more secure than chip/pin.

and (more importantly?) all that precious information on your spending habits- see the addblocker thread
apparently not:
"Security is at the core of Apple Pay; but so is privacy. We are not in the business of collecting your data." (Was that a shot at Google?)When you go to a shop, Apple doesn't get to know what you bought, how much you paid for it, or any other personal details.
the main thing about Apple NFC is the momentum.
it's not just the US that's already ahead of the game on the wallet side, but apparently even I can pay at any starbucks, Aral (BP I think) petrol station, every German Autobahn service area, plus an awful lot more, in Germany, right now.
Now I know it had NFC when I bought the phone, and I'm sure I'm not alone in not realising that I can just put my phone beside the Chip+PIN terminal right now and enter PIN, and that a bazilion terminals aer already NFC ready. There's no logo that shouts out NFC. In fact it's only since I got a V-Pay bank card that I even noticed the V-Pay logo on such terminals.

I think JLaw might want a word.

Sometimes we have to think of the greater good.
Personally, I can't wait to look at the planets on my watch and send crap little pictures to my friends, that just made the watch look way too geeky, didn't help having a bill gates lookalike presenting it. I might still get one for the fitness side though.
have a polar watch - never use it
thought about a garmin watch - prolly never use it other than to record a ride/hike
might think about it when it's a startrek next gen style communicator in clothing.
in the meantime I'll tell the time on my G10, smug in the knowledge that the battery will probably still have enough juice to turn the hands tomorrow morning.
anyway... I'm off to the shops to see what logos I can spy on the PoS card terminals, in a country that apparently 30% of the population are NFC ready but are allergic to credit cards...
Polar watch.. which one? For sale?
How are they going to do that? It's asymmetric, with the windy bit just above (on a left arm wrist) a button. Put it on the other arm and either you'll be reaching across the watch face to use the controls, or if you turn it upside down the strap will be wrong, and the controls the other way up...
No it won't. If you watched (ha!) the presentation, the straps and bracelets, unlike any other design out there, are easily removed and swapped round, you press a little button on the underside of the watch and the strap slides out of its slot, and locks in place when replacing it. Several of the straps and bracelets also don't have catches or buckles, they lock closed with high-power magnets.
Ideal for a south-paw. The Crown will be at the bottom of the case, instead of the top, which may even make it easier to use; in any case you can scroll or touch with just a fingertip.
That watch like device on Kirk's arm, looks exactly like that watch like device on the left!
ZOMG!
*LIKES*
* wets pants at that image of Kirky
Wow 8 pages on a product thats not on the shelves yet

Shit! Is there an embargo?
I know, I've tried again to log onto Apple store only to be met with:
"Bugger off you lot, now'ts available yet"
Or something similar.
How bloody rude of them. 😛
😆 @ Bikebouy.

A 'which way up are you' software setting is the real innovation there.
Well the Apple store now has iPhones for pre order on the 12th, available from the 19th Sept..
Expect queues longer than an iPsters satchel strap.
So do all the telcos, signed up for Vodafone's early warning.. though think last time f all happened with that.

That was indeed a wet fish slapped around Googles monetisation practices. I'm verboten by my employers for using a fair chunk of Googles toolset due to privacy concerns. Which is really annoying.
I was very 'meh' about Applepay till the bit about digitising existing CCs came up. Might have legs this time, I still get a kick from a tap debit card transaction sadly enough.

Dunno, there's probably a reason the crown is above the button on a left wrist, I don't doubt that Apple have studied the best way to position them...
Still, not a problem - there's no way I'm getting an iPhone, far too happy with Android to be bothered changing. And if the new watch forces Samsung et al to up their game - so much the better. (Although currently I think Apple are still playing catch up, the Android offerings are still at least as good or better).

My bank has an NFC app that avoids any need for Google services (beyond the Play Store), not sure what the issue is here. I'm sure they'll have the Apple iOS version out in no time at all.

Never really understood the queuing thing. I phoned O2 upgrades on the launch day of the five and had one delivered by 9am the next day.
Well I like Windows Phone 8.1 that I received two days ago for free 🙂
Sado here watched the launch coverage again tonight, I think the way the camera and video is advancing is really impressive, double shutter speed hd slo mo vs 5S which was already pretty good plus all the image stabilisation
Never really understood the queuing thing
"I've got it, who wants it for £1500?"
