Yup, me.
I'm pretending I work for a living.
Just another frigging stupid way for shops to make more money....
LittleMissMC is a big fan of the Brownie stories so is going to school in her Brownie uniform. Saves getting her changed for tonight's meeting as well!
I'm still off work on this lovely sunny day so I shall be dressing up as Bradley Wiggins and going out on my bike!
The boy, 5, is going as Chewbacca and the girl as a Rydell High cheerleader, from Grease that she has been WATCHING lots lately
WTF
Can't be bother to argue with the Mrs, sometimes you just have to let them get on with it.... 🙄
I've washed my hands of it... after spending the best part of an evening last year, making a Golden Ticket.
Eldest has gone as Mabel Jones. My wife had to make some red stripey pyjamas from scratch, which she did superbly.
I'm in my dressing gown and pyjamas also, so I'm calling it an Arthur Dent costume.
(speaking as a non-parent,) why are people wearing fancy dress today?
I'm a parent and I've no idea either!
It's a yearly "Kids got to school dressed as their favorite Book character"
Mr Twit and a My Little Pony - kids love it and it does get them talking about books (or films and TV 😳 )
Matilda (complete with jug with newt (not real!)) and Peter Pan, I am,as usual dressed as a tramp.
Mine have gone as the Lion from the Butterfly Lion and Grandpa (WW2 Spitfire pilot) from Grandpa's Great Escape.
This year it was comparatively easy to cobble something together for this. No midnight sewing required.
I am the secret footballer - deface an old white t shirt with black marker as per book cover and shove him in his football kit, also saves getting changed for footy practice, plus he gets to go to school in his football kit. It's a winner all round!
My Boss says my colorful shirt makes me look like a Camp Cowboy - does that count?
my nephew (4) is going as a pirate. he wants me to go to mothers day lunch as a pirate - just me though. not sure if he said it, or it's a wind up.
I might just do it. I need a laugh.
It counts if you've got a book with a camp cowboy in it
I think my lad went off to college as Hannibal Lecter... or maybe that's the way he always looks....
Eldest (10) went in as Katniss Everdeen, and looked pretty good too.
Youngest (6) went in as Anna from Frozen, along with many many others it seems.

I am as cynical as they come but I think you're mistaken here...
It's about trying to encourage reading books and engaging children's imaginations. Besides by a quick look around, I seriously doubt anyone at my kid's nursery/primary has gone out and spent any money on this? Loads of already worn Disney/Marvel costumes being wheeled out again. The best
I spotted was a Cat in the Hat(although I don't like the books) - it transpires the mum used to be a theatrical make up artist.
oldest is dressed as the Where's Wally character, daughter is dressed in a 101 Dalmations theme as thats what the school has chosen for her class. youngest is dressed as Jake and the Neverland Pirates
I left before the kids got dressed, managed to start giving them brekkie though
But the plan is my son is going as Batman and my daughter as Jessie, Woody's female sidekick from Toy Story
Iron man and captain america this morning.
Ours has gone as a snail from 'The snail and the whale'.
Was the only home made outfit we spotted.
For those in the dark, it's [s]World Book[/s] fancy dress at school Day.
Nominally, it's about encouraging reading. Realistically, it's about costume one-upmanship.
Realistically, it's about parental [s]costume[/s] one-upmanship
Fixed that for you. 😉
Luckily [s]I won[/s] my lad won the prize in year R for some utterly explicable reason (pity maybe?) so my efforts have subtly tailed off ever since.
I spent some of last night carving a wand from a stick 🙂
For those in the dark, it's [s]World Book[/s] fancy dress at school Day.
My facebook feed is full of pictures of kids dressed as Anna & Elsa from Frozen or assorted Avengers and super heroes?
What books are they from exactly?
Our school has gone a bit more low key and just asked the kids to bring in a book and "a prop" from the book. Seems sensible and cuts down on the parental one-upmanship.
My 14 year old daughter seems to just pick an outfit she likes and then decide on a book character who might wear the same clothes on their day off.
What the frank is "year R"?
or assorted Avengers and super heroes? What books are they from exactly?
Whoa! Deja vu. They must have changed something in the Matrix.
50 odd years of comic books ( again)
My facebook feed is full of pictures of kids dressed as Anna & Else from Frozen or assorted Avengers and super heroes? What books are they from exactly?
Frozen books and Avengers books, I'd guess?
year r (reception) is the first year at school. Age 4-5
What the frank is "year R"?
Reception - the year before Year 1.
What the frank is "year R"?
I assume it's Reception.....It's what all right-minded Scottish persons know as Primary 1.
Dressing up day is Tuesday. Well Tuesday night actually as Mrs H goes to the gym ....
boy gone to nursery as a pirate from one of his many hackneyed humorously titled pirate books e.g. 'The Fartypants Pirates of Poo Island'
My son has dressed as Just William. But with long trousers and no cap.
Wasn't there some hoohaa last year about a gloitbag who thought it was reet funny to let her 10 yr old lad go as the geezer from 50 shades?
50 odd years of comic books
Frozen books and Avengers books, I'd guess?
Not really in the spirit of things is it?
I doubt many kids are dressing up as the authentic 1968 Colan and Esposito "Invicible Iron Man"
And so far I've only read one "Frozen" related book that even tried to be anything more than a crap cash in on the movie.
I assume it's Reception.....It's what all right-minded Scottish persons know as Primary 1.
or simply just Reception class 😆
Pah middle class arty w*nk, bollocks. Pathetic, if kids don't want to read for the sake of reading then you are a sh*t teacher / parent.
I doubt many kids are dressing up as the authentic 1968 Colan and Esposito "Invicible Iron Man"
also doubt that many kids are dressing up as the bestselling author and subject of countless books both biographical, historical and fictional, Adolf Hitler.
Maybe kids like Elsa and Captain America better than genocidal dictators. Who knew?
I'm still sat in my cycling gear, does that count? 🙂
Pah middle class arty w*nk, bollocks. Pathetic, if kids don't want to read for the sake of reading then you are a sh*t teacher / parent.
Isn't a big part of that about encouraging kids to read and making books fun?
Which is exactly what this "middle class arty w*nk, bollocks" day is meant to be about? 😕
Maybe kids like Elsa and Captain America better than genocidal dictators. Who knew?
Yep, those are the only two options available.
Hollywood films or books by Hitler.
Totally forgot about it so sent my daughter to school today holding a toaster and told her if anyone asked she's page 256 of the Argos book 😆
Doing it right 😀

He's gone to work dressed up as an astronaut. 😀
What books are they from exactly?
Agreed.
and various fart signs and fart soundbox
a putin' an' a trumpin' no doubt.
It was time to dig out the trusty Gruffalo costume. Also been used for Halloween and World Wildlife Conservation Day at Pre School.
Our school have done a proper middle class take on the first world 'world book day' issue - come as your favourite Shakespeare character. 😯
Quite a few of the four year olds are struggling with that concept...
It was time to dig out the trusty Gruffalo costume. Also been used for .... World Wildlife Conservation Day at Pre School
Why don't you know?
Theres no such thing as a Gruffal....Oh!
😀
come as your favourite Shakespeare character.
Has anyone blacked up to be the Moor of Venice? 😀
I work in a high school, some of the teachers are dressed up as what can only be described as idiots.
Today is now hell.
in my girl's school they did it slightly differently and every year had to go as a different character from an authors books i.e. yr 5 was David Walliams and yr6 was Julia Donaldson. The Ninkynonks are in yr 3 and theirs was Roald Dahl... so one Umpa Lumpa and Sophie from BFG.
Must admit they did look cute this morning! :o)
The Ninkynonks are in yr 3 and theirs was Roald Dahl...
They should have gone as James Bond then. 😉
Why don't you know?Theres no such thing as a Gruffal....Oh!
my favourite food the gruffalo said...youll taste good on a slice of bread...
LittleMissMC's teacher went last year as The Boy in the Dress.
Apparently he won't be repeating that this year....
my favourite food the gruffalo said...youll taste good on a slice of bread...
Not big. Not bad. But a mouse at least.
You'll taste good as a midnight feast.
I think anything that encourages kids to read or parents to read to their kids is a good idea but judging by the playground this morning the kids that were in costume are already getting this and those that weren't are not. Hopefully the day will rub off on those ones and make them want to read. Whether that will be enough to overcome their parents indifference to reading is another thing. Round our way a lot of the parents would rather spend their money on cigarettes and alcohol and not books.
If kids are just going as bloody Frozen characters or ones from other films then it's going to make bugger all difference. I like the theme idea from some people's schools - but then again, that makes it something that the school's directed rather than coming from the kids.
Our kids have to bring the book in, stand up in assembly and say something about the book and their character. Seems a good idea as it avoids generic film characters being used. They also can't win the year or overall prize for best outfit if they are in a shop-bought outfit.
Zero-cost bodge-jobs seem to win.
I think getting them to bring in the book is a good plan.
If they want to dress up as a character from a book then let's see the actual book.
That lets kids select more obscure books that the school may not have and gives them a chance to read from the book, show it to friends and discuss it in class.
also doubt that many kids are dressing up as the bestselling author and subject of countless books both biographical, historical and fictional, Adolf Hitler.
One for the 7 year old for next year...
Today I sent Charlie Bucket and Greg Heffley (you'll know if you have an 8 year old that reads) to school. They were amongst the minority that weren't dressed as premiership footballers or superheroes.
It's a pain in the arse but childen at or school needed to bring the book with them.
My boy took Pirate love Underpants and went as a pirate with pants on his head. Just so happened that he was a pirate at Haloween and that was the costume we had!
My daughters school you are supposed to take the book in. Though having watched the kids coming out when I picked her up, I'm intrigued as to what book Lionel Messi is in from the number of kids in his kit.
Special prize for the TA wearing her normal clothes - and a badge saying "Muggle"
The Train conductor was 'where's wally!
Wot no pics?

Might not be all that obvious for anybody who hasn't read kids' books - characters from the books they're currently reading.
A few Darth Vaders around - SiL posted on FB a pic of her boy with a Star Wars book, so clearly that's legit. Though in general it seems a really good idea to me, as even if the parents aren't into books, it is just another little thing helping books seem exciting.
I was having a whinge to my wife about the amount of kids going as Marvel Super heroes or Disney Princesses and my 10yr old son pointed out that Marvel wrote comic books before films and most of the Disney princesses are based on books (Frozen is apparently based the Ice Queen by Hans Christian Andersen). Cocky little bugger.
Youngest was Willy Wonka (mainly homemade) - to be fair he's watched both films about 5 times in the last week trying to perfect the mannerisms!
An old school friend works in a secondary school and she went in full stormtrooper outfit - YESTERDAY
from what I gather from facebook stalking - many lols were had by one and all
(saw pics and she's in a proper outfit (not el cheapo) and is rocking it with black stilletos
Your son was apparently on this thread earlier 😀
Frozen is apparently based the Ice Queen by Hans Christian Andersen
It's really not. They both feature ice and magic, that's about it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Snow_Queen#Story
(I remember reading the Snow Queen as a kid and being terrified by people getting shards of the broken troll mirror in their hearts, making them see ugliness and evil everywhere. I think the boy gets some in his eye too. Weird book)
Frozen is apparently based the Ice Queen by Hans Christian Andersen
Only very very slightly.
As a supply teacher going to a school for the first time I was not risking turning up as The Cat in the Hat or as last year a farmer from Fantastic MR Fox (good excuse though to wear my tweed jacket and have bags of doughnuts in the class) , only to find that it was not happening at that school. Could have though. All good fun although the lack of imagination appals me. It was all Tesco princess costumes and lots of kids with their heads in Minecraft boxes! Don't get that one.
I think getting them to bring in the book is a good plan.If they want to dress up as a character from a book then let's see the actual book.
And for the kid who lives in a home with no books?
They say 'Sorry Miss I didn't have any books' and the teacher says 'that's ok, it's not a big deal' and we all carry on...
The teacher pre-empts this and suggests that everyone has a good look in the school library prior to world book day.
And for the kid who lives in a home with no books?
A visit from social services?
He looks more like Hiccup than Hiccup.
I think getting them to bring in the book is a good plan.
If they want to dress up as a character from a book then let's see the actual book. And for the kid who lives in a home with no books?
Well a wee lad in my boys nursery today turned and said to me "we've no got any books in oor hoose" To which I replied "Have you not?" And he said "haaaaaaa got you, only kidding you". He's 4. He saw the middle class angst all over my face and stitched me right up...I like him.
