Hi any thoughts on good 29er hardtail tires/combo for wet peat moorland mixed in with gravel tracks. Bike takes up to 2.325. Currently running vee crown gems not great in the wet slop
I use Bonty XR4/XR3. If it's that wet, grip won't be the issue, and most routes around here in the Dales are pretty solid with occasional boggy bits. If the route is predominantly gravel, then XR3 front Xr2 rear will be fine.
If it's wet I wouldn't want to be riding on peat, you'll just churn it up. I did run Bonty XR4/XR3 in the winter and XR2/XR1 for summer but am now on XR3/XR2 pretty much year round. This is for the Dales, Lakes and Scotland.
It’s as Martin says Whitestone more occasional boggy sections. Really it’s short sections with peat substate that can be hard to avoid. Was trying to think how to explain it as it’s not your typical terrain most things I read are for trail centre stuff. Cheers for the advice I’ll look into the Bontys
For me, the payoff for non-draggy tyres on hardpack is probably worth the occasional short bogtrot pushing the thing.
Martin and I don't live too far apart! Most of my riding is in the Dales and I get by with the Bontys. Then again last winter was so dry it didn't make much difference.
Was unreal how dry it was. I’d just done my local loop on Threshfield moor and it’s sloppier now that mid winter!
Strangely Boss Moor and the short section past the barn at Height Laithe that gets churned up by cattle were what I was thinking of when I wrote that! Until this January I'd never crossed Boss Moor and stayed dry.
Edit: Chevin Cycles in Skipton do Bonty tyres
I suppose I do pick the route to match the conditions. If it's very wet, I don't tend to ride the whole of Boss Moor/Threshfield Moor. But even the boggy bits are usually 90% rideable with my normal 'summer' tyres.
I’ll have look next time I’m in town. The parks have done a good job of making boss moor more rideable that section after height laithe use to be pretty much un-rideable when I was a kid and behind the quarry is much better.
Yesterday afternoon I rode from Cracoe across Boss Moor to Threshfield then upto Heights Laithe & Mastiles. Weets down to Winterburn Reservoir & lane to Hetton. Hardly got the tyres wet! They have been repairing the BW near Heights Lathe which has got rid of those deep waterlogged holes. The usually cattle mashed bit by the old barn 'was' very dry yesterday!
Show how much rain came down last night/this morning. Will be good when they’ve finished the repairs
Yesterday was lovely and dry, a few puddles here and there but nothing major. Overnight and this morning was lashing down, the garden went from firm, near concrete to squishy in under 24hrs. Spent the later part of the afternoon watching the thunderstorms roll through.
A nice loop that @pennine Not sure why the park used clay to repair that BW near Heights Laithe but it gets really clarty after rain.
One wet bit that's been improved is the BW leading south from Bordley Farm - you used to be balancing on rocks in the water to open the gate but it's been piped and covered in hardcore.
Just as warning as I’m sure your all aware of but just in case take care on the bottom of moor lane behind Swindon Quarry heading to Skipton/grassington rd to Linton Byway as incredibly washed out, virtually a water course
That's not one I use regularly but it's been washed out to some extent for a while now, maybe two years.
I can see why you're asking about tyres for slop if you're trying to use the BW between there and Threshfield Moor.
I’ve had a 20 year hiatus from MTB so some changes to both gear and trails seem new to me! They had resurfaced the bottom of the track this spring with new hardcore. Yep that BW is wet in spots but as it’s been so dry it hasn’t been a problem, I like the tiny bit of singletrack at the top and make a nice sub 1 hour loop from home
