Needs to be 4-arm 130 BCD. Must have 175 cranks (otherwise Alfine set was looking good).
Got a low-end shimano lump on there at the moment that used to be a triple. Works very well for chainline. In now creaks incurably.
BB is currently square taper but tempted to replace the lot. Good idea?
Will external BB ruin my chainline?
Truvativ Isoflow?
RaceFace Ride XC?
Other suggestions? Budget is £not much.
Many thanks.
Whatever you can get hold of on the classifieds I reckon if you're looking for cheap...

There is likely to be **** all wrong with the chainset.

why?
external BB shouldn't make any difference, you can faff with the spacers.
as nickc said why would the crankset be making the creaking?
Ive clocked up around 1400 SS miles on my deore HT2 crank setup with no problems. Before that it had done probably 2-300 miles as a geared setup. Only replaced the BB once and that cost 20 quid. Sounds exactly what you want and a smidge under £50. If youve got money to burn go XT or XTR perhaps...mmhmmm.
Clubber. Cheers. Too much hassle.
Qwerty. Very helpful, thanks.
Tazzymtb. Very pretty. Tempted. Already got a chainring though and middleburn would limit future flexibility.
Cynic-al. Thanks. I daresay you're right. However, I've tried everything I can to cure it. I've been through Sheldon Brown's list. I've had the problem before (many years ago) and was never able to cure it. It's pissing me right off. I have been riding the same chainset for thousands of miles since I bought the bike in 1999 and it's a piece-of-sh*t alivio or worse anyway. So I thought I might get a new one.
NickC. You're right! It's 110. I looked up the wrong purchase. So it has to be 110 because I have a perfectly good Surly chainring with a hundred years of life left in it. Cheers for spacer advice and external BB reassurance.
yesiamtom. Square taper. Axle is steel, chainset is aluminium. Very slight movement between the two, perhaps because some historic under-tightening allowed a smidge of movement. A classic problem and difficult to cure. BB is pretty new. Crank has done a lot of miles.
Not as wonderful as usual SSW! Maybe my question was rubbish.
130mm 4 arm? Are you sure? 130 is usually 5 arm, Shimano road pcd. If it's 4 arm it's likely 104.
You could try here
when I had creaking cranks used to put some loctite on tapers - seem to kill the creaks and take up the slack. also check your pedal bearings
Fair enough, cranks can cause creaks, it's just rare.

Is this worth a look? They do nice 32t stainless chainrings too.
Superstars. Thank you.
Sam, you're right it's 110.
avdave2 - that's a perfect link, thank you.
cynic-al. You've got me doubting myself. I'll try a few more check.
Bobgarrod - thank you. Just bought some threadlock for something else. Worth a go. Thank you very much.
DeVs. That's on budget. Thank you very much.
Cheers all.
