Any carbon at that price will have cheap bits attached to it...

But what type of riding do you want to do?

If it's got to be carbon then the Carrera Titan is probably the one. Never ridden one properly but it has a nice spec- Reba SLs, X7 and X9 gears, Avid Elixir Rs... Not great wheels though, 317s on Formula so if you've got a grand and a half to spend this + a wheel upgrade would be pretty nice I reckon, and you'd still have change for nice contact points etc. Considering the frame material it's a hell of a nice set of kit really. To me it felt like most people's idea of a race bike, stiff and almost twitchy but very responsive.

And staying with the Halfords theme 😉 The Boardman Pro is very nice at £1000. Reba Race, X0 and X9, more Elixir Rs, better wheelset.

The crush is nice but has a huge cost-cut in its wheelset, Mavic 117s on a £1100 bike is a joke frankly, especially on a fairly hardcore build, though at least your budget would cover replacements. And on that note, think it's fair to say it's more of a trailbike than a classic XC bike, though I bet it's still nice enough over distance.

I was always taken with this at Wiggle. Good spec if they still have your size

www.westbrookcycles.co.uk, they've got some cracking deals on 2009 bikes, you might be able to talk them into selling you a scott scale 20 for £1500 cash or a little more. Sarah99, haven't you just sold a cannondale taurine? What didn't you like about it?

Some good options here thanks to all I am down to

Cannondale taurine £1,350
Scott scale 30 £1,400
Trek 9.7 elite £1,400

Final thoughts on these? the specs look almost the same I guess its which i like the look of the most! as i thin kthey all have lifetime guarantees on frame.

or any last minute surprises?

Yes the taurine was fine just too way too small 2x sizes! (i got back what i paid so fine) thats the odd thing looking on ebay some 09 bikes go for about the same second hand than you can buy for new if you haggle hard & look around.

Gt Zaskar Carbon Expert. Rebas , SLX drivetrain , rolling on MAvic Crossrides . Although at £1200 you could sell the MAvics for £100, and but something stronger for the weight.
Never seen one, or ridden one, but own an ally '96 version with XT bits and bobs.

What about Focus Raven at £1039? It has a Carbon frame with not bad spec, it would leave you £500 to change fork/wheels if you wanted.
