Am i right in thinking this is as obvious as 5 1/2 inch travel? if so, whats the max travel i can run the fork at? safely... 😉

Not as simple as that.
2010 bikes and earlier came with 140mm forks
2011 bikes come with 150mm forks.
It's not actually the travel that's the limiting factor, it's the axle to crown height (A2C).
On a Meta the recommended A2C = 510mm
Maximum (for warranty purposes) = 535mm
