What frame bags?

[#13535392]

Just put an order in for a new bike. My first one in 11 years and I'm quite giddy!

It's gravel, and I'm wondering what frame bag. Need to carry, phone, bump, multitool, puncture kit, emergency tube and levers.

it isn't often that I treat myself, so I'd like something "nice". But I am a notorious tight bastard, so not "too nice".

Bike is lively mix of pink and tan, so something that matches would be a bonus.

Alpkit make some nice ones. Waterproof Deluge is fairly cheap, the Glider is available in more colours. They made me a slightly modified handlebar bag, and one of the options was custom colours if the standard ones don't suit. Bit of an upcharge for that.

I’m a fan of Restrap kit for what that’s worth.

I've have a Decathlon frame bag for my Camino and it's excellent.  Pretty good fit, secure even on rough stuff and relatively cheap compared to the trendier brands.  It has 2 compartments, the lower one being intended for a water bladder, I'd prefer just one big one, but other than that it's great.  It's tan too, so would go well on your bike! image.png

If my Revelate gave up tomorrow I’d be looking at a Tailfin. Not the cheapest and any colour you like as long as it’s dark grey but from a technical point of view it looks very good.

Tailfin.

Not cheap but it's excellent kit, it's all modular so top tube bags and frame bags can be combined using just the one set of straps. Loads of options and sizes, there's a measurement guide on their website to help you visualise what each size will look like on your frame.

I've got a couple of the frame bags and I'll be adding the rack system to it soon as well.

https://www.beerbabe.co.uk/ if you fancy some recycled inner tubes for a frame bag.

The alpkit ones look decent for the price.

I've been using a small evoc one for a year now, and it's holding up well.

I have some alp kit bags. I use the top tube bags and small frame bags all year round. They have been great.

I got a wizard works under seat bag in black and beyond splatter this year. Looks awesome

I like my Wizardworks one, but really the fit & shape of the bag vs frame is the most important as a nice bag that doesn't fit properly will look/work worse than a cheap one that does!

Most have a template set you can print out to check the fit:

I'd have thought a frame bag would be overkill for what you list and just general riding? I go in order: Seat pack, top tube bag, handlebar bag, frame bag for storage. As for frame bags then agree with Tailfin (just bought one myself), I like the the idea of carbon struts preventing it bulging too much (that said they are about the top end of the price range, outside of some niche custom makers)

I like restrap as well, just bought their switch rack and it's very nice.

For what you list in the OP though id have a little seat pack for tools and a top tube bag for the phone (Although I put mine in jersey pocket)

Personal preferences but the frame bag is my go-to first thing.

Basic spares in the frame storage box.
Small frame bag for everything else. Keeps the saddle and moat of my back pockets free, puts the weight central and it's out the way of knees, road spray, mud etc.

For bigger rides, a bigger frame bag.

The only thing I wish Tailfin would do is print the size on their bags, I can never remember what I have!

Yep, all personal preference but my first thing would be either a bar bag or small frame bag which then lives on that bike. Then I have a small zipped wallet/pouch with multi-tool, levers, tubeless plugs etc. and I just move that and the pump from one bike to another.

The only exception really is my road-only bike where I have a smaller multitool and tube in a mini seatpack because that's the only bike I wear a jersey with pockets for the pump and snacks. Everything else I like to ride without a pack and in pretty casual gear so it all goes on the bike where possible.

I'm Also interested in this one, I'm similarly tight-arsed when it comes to spending on stuff I will use a handful of times a year...

I currently have a "Podsacks" ~1/3rd sized I got for a tenner from PX ages ago, with it fitted I can still use both internal bottle cages. it's a smidge short length wise but has worked on a couple of bikes for me and most usefully it's waterproof. However My current problem with it is the straps won't go round the full size pump I like to run under the TT so I'm debating a bigger/full infill frame bag replacement (ideally with straps that can wrap a TT and frame pump) for more luggage laden trips, this Lomo job is a budget contender for me currently:

Cycling Frame Dry Bag | Lomo UK. Wetsuits & Dry Bags

It's a bit more MTB than Gravel frame Shaped but should fit well around my pump as a result, straps can be changed about, importantly it's quite cheap.

The Vulpine one is pretty cheap on Sport Pursuit at the moment (no clue if it's any good though), they have some other frame bag options on sale to https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/4292797/
