I signed up just to stalk my dad who I haven't seen for years. I haven't posted a thing and already have 3 followers. Bizarre.

I keep getting people following me who want to take their clothes off.

They love me long time for a fee.

Real people usually loads better than celebs. I follow a MTB-ing policeman, a fell running nurse, some dutch mates of mine, and of course Brant Richards 😆

I follow this lot

http://twitter.com/andymatthews/following

Have a kick around in there. Quite a few cycling related ones.

You'll get all sorts of people following you. You can almost predict who is going to follow you in the next few minutes. For instance I mention "Rainwater pipes" in a Tweet and 2 people start following me who sell rainwater pipes.

Dick_Barton - if you want some real boring stuff to read about! I've got a couple of lists set up so there might be people on there that you might want to follow - Biking; Diabetes and Biking Companies...

Yeah, you don't need to talk to people on there but it's a great way of finding lots of great info and keeping up to date with things.

As soon as you find someone who tweets about stuff you like, they will have some others who are similar, just follow them as well. If they annoy you, bin them, easy enough to do (although I think I have only got rid of one who was just going on and on and on about, absolutely nothing).

I use twitter for work – it a good way of keeping up to date with Dementia & Nursing research as well as making comments on whatever effects & interests me at work - @opmh

On the other hand it’s quite a good way of just getting info and comments from like minded people - @breakneckspeed

Neither of these accounts stops me been social active, adept or a fully rounded & grounded person (not just my opinion I’ve been asses professionally)

I've witnessed and been part of some genuine interactions, meetings and rides through twitter. Works for me.

I'm @miketually on Twitter and most of the people I follow are worth following (otherwise I wouldn't follow them): http://twitter.com/miketually/following

I mainly follow bikey or foody people on there.

Its a good way to arrange rides with mates if you can't pick up the phone or text.

Some that are good are

@ukbikeskills
@jimbosussexmtb
@shedfire
@HanIadventures

plus a few other likely individuals and organisations 😉

Oh and if anyones interested I'm @WorthinSi but I'm quite dull tbh 🙄

serious question

why would you follow someone?

it just seems a bizarre concept to me that one person is constantly interested in someone else's thoughts & actions

tis, it seems to me, a bit of a stalking mechanism, however, I like stalking some people like lancearmstrong, Steve Peat etc It's not really very interesting tbf. Think it was actually started as an advertising tool so companies could communicate with one another and advertise new products or conferences...

If someone can reassure me that it's not remotely annoying and full of s*** as facebook I might give it a go.

Do you like my new front door? 🙂

You follow someone who says, or does, or links to interesting things. You don't have to read everything they post. I like it for the chat and banter.

If someone can reassure me that it's not remotely annoying and full of s*** as facebook I might give it a go.

Just like Facebook, you only see who you choose to see. If you don't follow/friend annoying people who are full of shit, they're not full of shit.

I've met up with a good few people off Twitter... And had some great rides out.
To be fair, it's not that different on here.. You follow like minded people..

Nobody is that interesting to follow though - if someone tells you they are worth following there is an expectation...it rarely gets met so they then consider them boring (I follow myself and I don't live up to my expectations so I'm amazed that 110 people actually think I'm worth following...poor folk!)...

Doing something you didn't do, didn't know about and had no interest in just to justify having a fancy phone?

A very nice shade of red. Am thinking of something similar ourselves but i quite like the dark blue one 😉

See Twitter has uses, you just have to know who to follow and pay attention 😛

I tweet, been on two sucessfull rides organised via twitter. I mostly tweet about food and anything bike related plus silly things like the fact that I bought nail varnish to match my bike.

My advice for news sources, is to only follow 1 source (per hobby/interest), else you'll be flooded with the same news multiple times. At least one major bike mag spams their entire news feed summary to Twitter & Farcebook.

For techy (non-bike) stuff, I tend to use identi.ca more than twitter. On there you tend to follow groups as well as people. So in a way it's more like a forum, where your feed gets filled with all kinds of stuff on topics of interest rather than inane drivel.

This one 's quite amusing depending on your sense of humour of course. It could also be seen as highly offensive so dont look if you dont like naughty swear words

It's mostly just an insight into the crashing mundanity of other people's lives - it might make you feel better about your own as a side-effect. I'd liken it to one of those sci-fi type nightmares where you can suddenly hear the thoughts of everyone around you. People who suffix every other post with 'nom nom nom' want spanking :-/
