Anyone going? Either watching or racing?
Ooh, it's this Saturday isn't it? I might well bob along and watch... Will there be any riding to be done for spectators?
Abigale is racing in the ladies. Katie and me arnt racing this year due to her back operation and my shoulder.

Went last year but don't think i can make it to watch this time around. Was good fun spectating at the finish line especially with the big drop in for the riders to deal with. Still wince when I remember the bloke who landed on his top tube 😕
I'll be there, yes. If you see a nondescript man standing watching, either alone or with his missus and/or mates, say hello.
A nondescript man eh? Are you sure you're not me?
It might be me
Is it on the tellybox, perchance?
new track is much better than old track.
have fun.
Must say I fancied this, was thinking of taking my 5 year-old son too. However it's on a Saturday afternoon and I live the wrong side of the city to be messing around trying to get past Hillsborough when Sheffield Wednesday are playing at home. Seems like poor planning date-wise. Shame cos I would have gone otherwise.
what a fricking weak reason not to go, on that basis i'd never be able to leave my house every other saturday!
open your mind a bit and use a road other than the A61?
Thanks for your feedback tracknicko. I haven't entirely discounted going, but there's no denying that the timing makes it a far more difficult prospect than it needed to be when the likelihood is that my son will be bored after an hour when the novelty of the fast bikes has worn off, and he wants to go home to watch Scooby Doo.
I'll be in my usual British Army Camo jacket if anyone wants to [s]say hello[/s] punch me in the mouth
A nondescript man eh? Are you sure you're not me?
Actually, I think I might be. I all look alike.
I are many.
Me'n'her are going...
Probably sheltering from the deluge in the Cotic ezyup.
apparently, it's a 3pm kick-off, so getting to the race shouldn't be a problem.
but it might be a different story 2 hours later...
oh how i hate football.
(you'll be fine if you want to pop along for a bit, watch some bikes, go home)
relliott6879 - MemberIs it on the tellybox, perchance?
Anyone know?
I'm racing.
I'll be "racing" too- most likely last place in the vets category.
I went up last week for a quick play, the track is really nice and flowy, just a shame it seems likely to rain non stop till the weekend, will be very slippery....
the new track is brilliant, I spent a couple of hours there last week. Hope the rain stops though otherwise the flat corners in the middle muddy section are going to be interesting. I was 2 wheel drifting off the track last week and that was before about 3 inches of rain
docrobster - I'll challange you for that last place in vets 😉
I'll be racing and were sponsoring the Elite Prize. Should be a cracking day. New track is fantastic, although I'll be skipping that gap jump in the middle.
Its dry out today.
At least its stopped raining
its a 12 start isn't it??

Well i have walked the track yesterday as me and my partner are staying in sheffield at the present.
It looks like a fantastic cyclo cross downhill, but thats it, was not what i expected from a downhill race!! apart from a jump its very tame indeed and CYB trail centre is far more technically challenging!!!
and i thought wharncliffe was supposed to be a challenge huh!
The race is in Greno woods. Wharncliffe DH tracks are on the other side of the road
well said tracey. the idea is races for all in GRENOSIDE, not techical DH in WHARNCLIFFE.
there are plenty of tracks already on the other side of the road that are close to impossible if you want some tech.
they'll wipe that CYB is better smirk off your ****ing face i can tell ya.
i probably need a winky face on that last post. right? either way, wind ya neck in. people have put a lot of effort into building a nice approachable track there fella.
Fairhurst has a good point mind! I think it should be Steel city xc 2012! Downhill needs to be just that, DOWN! and tech!
tracknicko ok, i just though that with it being a downhill race it would be just that and not like cross country-cyclo cross.
the last race they was all wearing full amour goggles and it was a flat course.
i just dont understand why they should wear all the full garmenets and protection..
im all for safety but this hmm.
yeh i do agree its badly sold, being advertised as a 'dh' race. we ride the old (and now the new) courses of part of our xc loops, and very nice they are too.
i ride HT, no need for any more than that really. DH bike would indeed be proper overkill.
fairhurst - you should definitely get someone to show you the 'proper' downhill tracks on the other side of the road if the one in Greno is too tame for you. There is some really good, technical stuff.
A lot of it is beyond me and has been responsible for smashing up several wheels, helmets, ripped knee pads etc
yep. having raced DH for a few years, traveled and worked in the alps for the last 10 years or so, i can hand on heart say there a bits of WC that are the hardest tracks i have ever attempted.
short. but HARD.
and no it wont be on tv for the people asking. im not really sure what you guys think this race will be.
it aint the Bahrain GP. more of a mates race/regional DH vibe i think
if its not tech enough for you you should be riding quicker.
;o)
when's your run fairhurst?
Where's these mega tech lines in wharny?? I need to try em cos I thought I'd done em all but I must be wrong!
Fairhurst, assuming you're not just trolling, you should check out some the race reports on last years event. You would see that Chris Akrigg had a big crash and had to retire due to concussion. The course may require a bit more pedal but to get the bottom fast still takes a lot of skill.
Anyway I like it, allows average riders to compare themselves to the elite and realise how slow they are even on a "flat cyclocross course".
Last years was on Freecaster, its still on Peatys site
oh yeh i remember. ok fair enough.
The course may require a bit more pedal but to get the bottom fast still takes a lot of skill.
Am unsure on skill id say more fitness and a slight bit of skill for this event but respect to them who built and organised it..
bit of tech over other side of wharny but nowt major tech,
id say Rossit gill int lakes or red pike thats tech!

POSTED 45 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST
What an absolute load of shite!!! Thats what all the people say who can't ride steep tech stuff!
it's a 'mini Dh' - the idea is that it's a fun course for everyone, even kids (and crap, slow, old people).
it's only an ickle hill so there's no need for uplift trucks - you can walk easily to the top in about 15mins.
if you don't like it, you don't have to enter.
it'll be ace fun though...
🙂
these things are hard to measure, but i reckon the new track is a bit harder than last years (which was too hard for Chris Akrigg...)
good point Ahwiles.
if anything it will be good for the kids.
maybe for the downhiller's a bit dull eh?
not downhillers who like messing around on bikes.
i know some very good downhill racers who are very excited about the race tomorrow.
it'll be awesome to watch!
usual cock wavey forum response to how hard tracks are. it isnt that technical, but it inst a CX track

Yeh I think your doing a lot of willy waving yerself! 😆
flat as a pancake with an ok double. 3 times as much pedal strokes in than the full run of Pietermaritzburg..
be good event for the kids i agree.
just my opinion as it is a forum of discussion.
standard forum affair as i said. and i was pointing out stuff was hard rather than easy...
i look forward to seeing you on your CX bike down it.
Trackonick, I won't be doing it on my cx bike..... road bike more like!!! 😆
Cos I is awesome to de max! 😉
Its pissing it down... that may make it a bit harder for ya
Its good enough for steve peat yet the singletrackers aren't convinced..
I'll be there 🙂
ts good enough for steve peat yet the singletrackers aren't convinced..I'll be there
bit of publicity for wharncliffe etc
its a health and safety downhill race for the familys.
Wow, yet bad mouthing of peoples effort to do something for the cycling community.
I find the track fun, not the most testing, but fun. Isn't that what riding is about, fun?
If you've got the ability, you can makes it fun. I was making up lines and gaps all the way down the track, i was even making a point of not pedaling (though the double rquired a couple of strokes) and pumping the terrain, i was on friends (who don't hang about) rear wheels. That was testing, that made it interesting.
Riding is as fun as you make it, if you don't have the mental creativity or the skill to make the most of something, are you really that good?
I get this from a lot of DHers, always constantly trying to prove how gnar they are, when all they really do is try to get down the hill, head down, the most boring manner possible. A few DHers i've come across are normally good at are holding on, monster trucking over rocks and letting their stupid amount of suspension travel do the work for them. Then whinge somewhere isn't gnar enough when in fact they are overbiked.

Absolutly spot on mate.
To get down good downhills at pace and speed being fluid and smooth, and getting round the corners requires a great deal of skill through the rough-tech stuff.
Those who can do that on a hardtail i admire.
on big bouncy bikes on smooth tracks not so much admiration for it.
Steep tech i admire also.
With all the rain last night it should make it a bit more 'interesting'
Actually, i weren't meant to say "all dhers", that would be ridiculous.
I was meant to be something like several "dhers" i've had conversations with have made a point on commenting whether a track is beneath them, i proceed to ride with them, discover they aren't all that skilled and all they were doing is willy waving because they're insecure.
being a DHer is just a badge of gnar a lot of the time. Riding tracks not up to your skill level would dirty the badge.
I must also say i also know a lot of very awesome people who race DH, are very good on a bike, but most importantly enjoy riding bikes, it doesn't matter what bike it is, what they're riding, as long as they're on a bike, they're having an awesome time.
PS, i guess im a little mad too cos im in a cast, on the race list and can't race.
I must also say i also know a lot of very awesome people who race DH, are very good on a bike,
exactly to ride downhill properly takes some serious skill
ive done lots and lots of runs down the greno track on my ht, i rode at taff buggy a couple of weeks ago and i'd say greno is more difficult than taff.
Saying this is a health and safety race for families is pretty silly really and shows you have no idea.
Some of the best in the business will be there and they WILL be trying to win. Like at every dh race ive attended.
Saying this is a health and safety race for families
cmon you get what im saying,
cause i have an idea,
I just think rubbishing this race on the account of the gradient is silly. Its a ticky line..
And you won't see many if any dh bikes there today either so all the 'overbiked' comments are out the window too.
And you won't see many if any dh bikes there today either so all the 'overbiked' comments are out the window too.
well hopefully theyve learnt from last year not to bring the big bikes eh 😉
Great weather, great atmosphere and fellow spectators today. Nice food and parking spot on.
Thanks to everyone who raced 😀
Not going to slag it- if I was closer, I'd have been there for sure, looks a fun track and a great event. It's just not a downhill race, is all. You wouldn't do an hour long xc event and call it an endurance race 😉
What a marvelous event indeed! Fabulous to see a good mixture of cyclists come together of different sizes and ethnicity! I wanted the jelly baby man to win! 😆
Not read earlier comments but why slag it off? It seems to be an ideal EVENT TO RUB SHOULDERS with ALL types. Some folk want the moon on a stick and will then bitch the moon isn't white enough or the stick long..
C'mon, fair dos...if you were to actually get the moon on a stick, and it was a bit grubby and the stick too short, I think that's valid grounds for complaint. If you're going to go around handing these things out, you're duty bound to make sure they're up to scratch...that's all I'm saying.hora - Member

agreed.
dunno if was slagging it off Hora
just voicing my opinion of it,i did say respect to those who built organised it though.
maybe next year they will do a downhill run and a seperate run for the kids?
that tack will be such good fun when baked!! Props.
Cracking day that.
Any results up yet?
I have to say as a punter wandering round with his hound it was a brilliant atmosphere, people chatting and saying hey up now and then.
Big up to the marshals and their whistle blowing, must be annoying at the end of the day.
Nick which dog do you have? I stroked a few nice uns.
Good day out. Would have been interesting to see how fast it would have been if it had been dry. Good atmosphere and friendly.

Hey hora, we have a blue and tan border terrier who spent most of the time on his back legs trying to lick passing peeps!
It was a great day out, the rain held off and I wasn't even last! Woop woop!
I've put some photos up here if anyone's interested. I was sitting in the bottom of the top gap jump and got some ok shots. If you find yourself and want the pic, email me to let me know and I'll send it through.

Lots of people getting air? Nah That must be a short XC race guys. 😉
BTW I lifted the Cotic Rocket to get an idea of weight.. I'm keeping quiet 8)
