You're right, they're rubbish. You can't even ride them up hills!

I can ride a singlespeed up a hill.
Just the one hill, mind.

I think they're great in the hills, BTW. They're only shit if it's flat.

I'd love to see you singlespeeders climb some of the hills I go up. I have a granny gear and I ain't scared to use it

I can ride a singlespeed up a hill.

Singlespeeders are also very defensive 🙂

Which hills? I bet someone's done it.

I ride singlespeed, by the way. Even up hills. Even steep ones on which I'd have used a granny gear when I rode bikes with gears.

I have honed down my commuter to 1 gear as its the only one I need so makes total sense to me. My bike would be useless for any other route though 🙂

I only recently tried SSing. I can get up hills I used a granny ring for too, just not if they are particularly long ones 🙂 And I'm not a nazi, though I am a tall, blonde, skin-headed, blue eyed aries 🙂

I had a go on a singlespeed bike for the first time this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was to ride!

I will change that, Singlespeeders think they are smart.

I am neither smart nor hard. However I appreciate the simplicity of my singlespeed and the complexity of the English language.

Singlespeeds are $hit?

I've got a funny feeling I'll be agreeing with this in a few days time, especially at 3am on the 'Puffer course.

As for hills, I haven't found one I can't ride down - does that count?

Never worked out how wearing your granny's gear helped on steep hills. Tried it once and the bloomers got caught in the chainring. I'll be watching for you perverts, next time I'm out.

And as for hard, well my woman doesn't complain.

Smart AND hard. Except me. I'm growing a beard, because SS is more fun than using gears in the woods.

TJ, there's always some-one who'll be able to do it. Most SS'ers aren't I know aren't doing it because they think they're double hard bast%^ds, they do it because it's a cheap way of doing something a bit different.

Cannae believe you've allowed HIM to con you into arguing about this{yet again}.

I know people must be a wee bit run down after the excesses of the Festive Period AND the trauma of the hack, but an obvious ploy like this which even has "troll" in the Tags, come on people...

If Smee isn't HIM I'll eat my own [s]hat[/s] DUST

Singlespeeders are actually kind sensitive types who worship the latest in cycling technology. There is nothing more wonderful in their eyes than the latest derailleur from Shimanolo.

And that is why they are not so crude and unfeeling to drag those carefully crafted masterpieces through mud and dirt, even though it may mean they have to struggle up hills and bear the invective of the uncultured bestial types who do.

Cheaper than a full XTR crankset, cassette, mechs, hub etc - if you want to take that route 😀

Can't believe no-one's used this one yet:

Are singlespeeds the new nazis?

Well, the abbreviation is 'SS'...

I like mine. Simple, much easier to clean when it's muddy, less to go wrong, cheap to fix, keeps me fit. I have one for commuting, which is great, because it just runs and runs with minimal maintenance, and is lighter than with gears.

Off road, I find my SS MTB great for flattish places, although it gets a little tiring after more than a couple of hours.

I'd use my geared bike for long days out, and very hilly places.

Horses for courses.

Nickc / miketually - Carn Ban Mor - now way would an SSer do that without a stupidly low gear and then they would have to freewheel the descent. There are a couple of local hills which I have never seen anyone make it up even with a granny gear let alone SS.

coffeeking -
we like arguing.

We are objective enough in our single mindedness to realise there is only one true way, and that gears are wrong, so don't think we are biased.

I think thats part of the fun of it - you have to strain to reach the top (rather than sitting back and relaxing in the granny, as most do - me included) but on the way down you have to pick your lines perfectly to maintain speed. Mines a rigid SS so its re-teaching me a lot of the old skill I had forgotten, but thats just due to my sloppiness!

So a singlespeed wouldn't be a disadvantage on those hills?

That's not niche - you mean a 69er SS bamboo frame tandem.

I couldn't ride my SS up all of the bridleway from Hortsop up onto High Street (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=343170&Y=512807&A=Y&Z=120), but neither could the guy I was with who had gears.
