Am up Sheffield this Friday/Saturday for a wedding reception.
Fancied riding the trails up there so was going to hammer around Rother Valley.
Is this a good idea or is there somewhere better to go?
Thanks
There's a surprising amount of pleasant off-road bimbling to be had round there.
Unless its changed since I lived up the road its just a lake surrounded by a path and then farmland with paths around the fields.
Plus Rother Valley isnt actually near the centre. Probably nearer to the Peak....unless you are staying near Rother Valley?
Rother Valley is nice for a bimble, but as above, unless you're staying close to it there are likely to be better options.
Parkwood is good for an hour or so if you're going to be near the city centre.
Lady Canning's/Blacka Moor on the edge of the Peak.
Various fun local trails depending where you are...
There are some man made trials there now, 5k of red which is a good ride and a section of black that is also reasonable if not a little short (probably about 800 yards).
It's very wet at the minute, Facebook group is called Rother Valley Riders, they do a regular monday night ride and some weekend stuff, worth tapping someone up to show you around if anyone is out riding on friday.
Cheers guys, am staying in the centre but not worried about heading out to look for trails if they are work it.
I saw parkwood when I did a quick internet search, am I going to get horribly lost if I head there though?
It'll be far easier to get lost getting to and going round rother than parkwood.
I like Parkwood but after 3 laps I'm bored, its just not long enough.
Rother valley is probably a 20 minute cycle from city centre, if you follow the National Cycle Route and know the way. The signposting can be a little lacking so I'd allow 30-40 minutes.
Personally I'd say try Parkwood or Lady Cannings. Also lots of natural stuff in the Dark Peak is the other alternative.
hang on,
you'll be staying in the centre, and you're wondering if you should head EAST to look for trails...?
Hunter's Bar, out and up through the parks, turn left, 1 or 2 laps of Lady Cannings, over Houndkirk Road to The Foxhouse, through Longshaw (be nice, it's busy), and onto Frogatt Edge (bn, ib), coffee and cake at Curbar Gap. Retrace route, turn right off H'kirk Road into Blackamoor, through Dore, down through Eccleshall woods, turn left, head for the city centre.
Smashing ride that. Allow 4 hours.

Just go faster, you won't have time to be bored...
IKWYM though, I usually end up "sessioning" the bermy/jumpy bits for a bit of technique practice.

This... or drive / train to Hope / Edale / Castleton
What ahwiles said, that was our standard ride of a Wednesday afternoon, or any Sunny morning when we couldn't be arsed with lectures for that matter, made for an excellent hangover cure.

Nope just heading to Sheff for a few days and looking for a decent ride while I'm up there.
Something easy to do and quick so I don't end up missing the reception or annoying my mates!
To be fair you could do Lady Cannings - Houndkirk Moor - Blacka Moor/Plantaion - Back to town. That should knock off at least an hour going from Longshaw to Curbar Gap and back again.
All excellent ideas, anywhere to park though that's the question?
Very tempted by Lady Cannings but is it easy to find?
thanks,
10 to 15 mins north will get you to Wharncliffe/Greno woods, plenty to do. Easy parking. Had a bit of rain this week but it was OK and dryish last weekend.

if you'll be 'in' Sheffield, ride your bike to Hunter's bar roundabout - Ecclesall road.
ride out through the parks, all the way. It's a long climb, but most of it is really nice - it kicks up a bit near the end...
once on the road, go up to the T junction, turn left.
ride along the flat road for about 1km, you are now at Ringinglow. See that small woodland? in there.
(dog-leg left onto sheephill road, but carry straight on to the old Roman road, there's the car park, there's the entrance to the plantation, follow the track up, turn right at the top)
Is this it? http://my.viewranger.com/route/details/NDY2Njk=
see the line of blue dots?
running left-right through Lady Canning's plantation?
can anyone find a link to the Longshaw-suggested routes?
Wiles talks sense OP
If no one puts up a route just log onto Strava and see who's been riding Lady Cannings this week and where else they went
You can drive to Ringinglow to avoid what's actually a nice climb through the park if you really want to but I'd ride if nearby
At Ringinglow take in Cannings as it's new 🙂 then go over Houndkirk Moor, easy to see on map to either Longshaw and back for some steady miles plus minus Froggatt Edge or loop into Dore through Blacka Woods for a selection of varying techie singletrack
Again snoop strava for routes if needed, sorry on phone so can't suggest myself
That's awesome, thank you all I have a fair bit of riding planned over the next few days. I might even sneak in a quick Cannock blast Friday early when I leave my parents.
Cheers again guys/gals.
