Just servicing my cannondale supersixย  for the first time. Removed the forks as the headset has a little play.

Appears the fork isn't fitted with My crown race at all just kind of shaped to fit the bottom bearing. This seems like a poor set up with potential for the contact part of the fork to wear.

Does this sound normal/correct?

Normal and correct, pretty daft from an engineering perspective (with regards wear) but a good idea with regards strength and weight........ take your pick.

Maybe the headset just didn't come with one?

Lots of road forks these days have integrated crown race - unless you're riding in the wet a lot and do no maintenance it shouldn't be a problem - there's a huge amount of redundant material and wear would only be a problem if the bearing seized, which you'd probably notice
