Again, I'm sure Retrobike would be the best forum for these questions, but they're taking their sweet ass time confirming my registration, and I'm sure plenty of folk on here use both sites 🙂

Trying to get a handle on the market value for all the retro bling that came on my Ibis Bow Ti... not necessarily to sell (or for willy waving on here!), but mostly for insurance. So, here's the list, for those in the know, if you could perhaps give an estimate of what each item may be worth (guide prices) it'd be appreciated.

- Marzocchi Superfly Z2 Bombers: unsure of year, maybe 1998? Mint and unused as far as I can see, original box and manual
- Chris King wheelset: non disc hubs, Mavic X517 SUP ceramic rims, gold (?) DT Swiss spokes (don't know model). Again, appear to be unused, no wear to the braking surface at all
- Cook Brothers Racing QR skewers: mint
- Avid Arch Supreme brakes, front and rear: brand new and unused, I have the original boxes and manuals
- Cook Brothers Racing cranks: black, 175mm, brand new and unmarked...
- Egg chainrings: triple setup (haven't counted the teeth yet), brand new
- Ringle 120mm 10 degree stem: brand new, original box
- SRAM ESP 9.0SL 10th Anniversary Ltd Edition derailleur & gripshifts (American Flag scheme): new... original box
- WTB SST98 Ltd Edition saddle - again, new and unused, original box

cheers chaps, appreciate any and all assistance and advice you can give. 8)

The Z2s might go for a pretty penny. Colour?

Can I call dibs on the ESP 9.0SLs? I'll give you £25 and a pint, that seems pretty much fair to me.

The Z2's are silver and gold (gold at the top and bottom)

Thats also a Buy-it-now or Best offer auction so it doesn't really mean anything does it!

10 year old bike bits? so 50% of original price and then 10 % depreciation for each year from there.

Seriously though, I "get" stuff like cook bros cranks, cook bros stem and even the ibis bow ti frame, but to me old forks are old forks. They are not like classic cars, they are like 486 DXII pc's for £1000 when I can get a quad core PC for £300 now...why would you?

indeed, not saying that's what they're worth, just an indication... it's a ridiculous amount of dosh in my opinion, but then they are rare 🙄

CHB, you can't buy a perfect Jaguar XK140DHC for the same as a mid-range Astra. The Astra will be faster, have better brakes and air con, but that's not the point...

Ah your first mistake, applying logic to retro mtb sales. Stuff that most people on here would class as old tat is very sought after by strange Europeans who sit endlessly scouring the internet for nos purple anno chainring bolts...

Where does one find these strange European types? I may feel the need to avail myself of their Euros...

PS, Tim, could you post this list on Retrobike for me? I'm not selling as yet, just trying to gauge value 🙂

I just sold a load of (a-hem) classic bits, the stuff I thought would be sought after wasn't, and the old sh.te that haad been lying around for years in the shed went for stupid cash.
Just stick it on thiefbay, with no reserve, and it'll go for what its worth.
(If you want more, or dont want to sell for that price, get someone to put a bid in)

Flash, I sort of get it.
I mean a DeLorean is a crap car, but collectable.
A 1930's Bugatti is, and always will be a work of engineering beauty.
To me the test is the amount of human craftman ship that went into the item. I can understand completley a 1992 DOGS BOLLOX frame, but old shifter and old forks are mass produced items that have been refined and improved by later mass produced items.
In the same way why the hell would I want an original 2001 Ipod?

In my head stuff is split into craft/artisan (for bike this included welding and CNC) and mass produced consumable items.

yep stuck the list on there for you.

imho sales are a bit odd on there though, whereas stuff has a quick turnaround on here, for sale threads on retrobike last ages, sometimes months.

People who are really keen, ie those people who would pay £60ish for those quick release skewers for example, can take years looking for the exactly correct bits... so it might take a while to find the right buyers.

So if I had your little pile of kit i would spend my time browsing ebay and using the search function and history on retrobike and see what the rough value is from a few sources first, you'll be amazed on somethings, and maybe a bit dissapointed on others, but all in all I reckon you'll recoup a fair chunk of that £2k from the bits.

The admins at retrobike have to personally register new users due to the spammers that have been getting through & PMing users with spam.

Took me ages to get registered on here so it's not just RB who take a bit of time to register new users.

There is a search function on the forum near the top of the page, or just browse the for sale threads or the 'how much is my....' worth thread

If Germany ebay is your target it might be worth listing it on Ebay.de (or whatever its called). I did the same thing for some french market specific non cycling stuff (Shadoks if that means anything). You just login to the German site using your UK login details.

I agree with Tim, research is the key, Retrobike, Craiglist, ebay completed items, set up worldwide ebay searches and take your time. good luck with it.

(Oh and please dont modernise that frame with disk mounts etc)

Oh and I've sold stuff on retrobike and found it took a while and was hard work at times. Stick to your price and take your time. The prices go up in the spring as well.

If proof were needed that someone out there will part with a tonne of money for what they perceive to be the right product, have a quick read of my thread from a few months back about a pair of white Onza Porcupine tyres (NOS) that went for close on £200 on eBay... Just incredible.

psychle, said it before and I'll say it again - that is one nice bike, but the star is the frame everytime. Get those parts sold and recoup some of your outlay and then get some M900 or M950 XTR on it instead

I've dropped you a mail on your listed email addie regarding the prices and regarding my interest in a couple of bits that I'll pay a very healthy sum for. Drop me a mail on pDOTmccarthyATukonlineDOTcoDOTuk

why do mountainbikers refer to bits as 'retro' rather than classic or old or vintage. I always thought retro was new stuff made to look old.

It has been noted that some of these weirdo retro geeks have been spotted outside Germany .
In fact , I saw some buffoon dressed head to toe in vintage gear , big mushroom helmet , dayglo legwarmers , the lot . One week he was on a pearl white muddyfox courier* , battering down the Ice Cream Run , which he reckons he named , and then the week after he'd swapped his entire wardrobe 2 yrs forward to reflect the 1989 DB Axis he was now riding . He went to great lengths to explain that he'd got it from cali' and that it used to belong to Harry Leary , whoever heee is , but that it was cool though cos he bought one originally in 1989 because in the earlier 80s he'd wanted a 'turbo ,but instead went fashionable and got an Ammaco Freestyle Pro that I still have in his mums garage.

* it was the 1987 model , that he explained , to er me , the er , previous week , was almost exactly like the one he bought in 1987 but had sold to fund the Axis buy . He explained , to , er me , that it was only almost exactly like his original one and only differed by having a brown leather not black leather saddle , and he went on to quote the original ad that said ' specification was subject to change without notice due to constant product improvement ', and it was therefore quite a coincidence to find a near perfectly similar example .

Does Tinker Juarez still ride for Generalbikes ? He's on the telly now . I know he was on Mongoose as a kid .
Oh hang on . It's on VHS . Jim Deaton's on in a minute . Rad

Yea , so anyway . What a geek .
I bet he spends his spare time listening to that 'Electronic 80s ' boxset.

Go Jim , go .
