Hi, grandchild is getting a bike for Xmas, his first 3 bikes have all be secondhand so parents are trying to go new, so mtb hardtail, probably 26, he’s about 4ft 10 but seems to be sprouting, thanks.

You'd be better off with an XS 650b and/or second hand. I've still got a 26" On One hardtail but it's getting stupidly hard to find decent tyres.
We got this from Merlin a few years back for youngest for about £400. He's outgrown it and it's currently up for sale but nothing seems to be shifting locally. It's been regularly ridden in the South Downs, on a trip to the Peak District and even the blues at BPW with a few mods. When they're growing that fast it's quite hard to keep up with spendy kit unless serious riding is their whole life (it isn't for ours).
Now well and truly outgrown.

Yeah, we’re now looking at 27.5, he seems to be,just at the height bottom end.
where is the live tempt and the Saracen ? (I think his mum wants new, I’m gently pushing a more practical approach)
Secondhand makes so much more sense when they are still growing fast.
My lad went up a bike size in about a month last year.
He's still coping on his mum's old XS HT for now though, not knowing any different, but I'm torn between swapping out the frame for a medium 26er or looking for a cheap medium 27.5er secondhand.
