So I've gone tubeless (and ghetto before that) for years - today was the first ever random unexpected "blowout". Tyre instantly "disassociated" itself from the rimstrip - kind of scenario.
So on a regular trail, with rims and tyres I've used for about 6 months without disturbing them - today I got dumped in the trail big time following a loud "POP" in a hardish right hander.
Suddenly no grip on the metal tyreless rim. Then sliding down the trail on my elbow and thigh. No real damage done - just gravel rash.
But: I'm just wondering how common that is?
I reinflated the tyre and carried on - but it dented my confidence somewhat.
Also - is there a term for this phenomenon?
I've only ever had that once, though it was with tubes.
Basically this is what happens when you pass Level 3 of GigaRad training.
Guess what Level 4 feels like!
Cheers Mark! I just know that you are being serious like!
only had this with Nobby Nics - so have avoided since, was using Mavic Crossmax SX wheels
I let the pressure go too low on mine front wheel (2.25 std Advantage or XT tubeless wheels) and it burped whilst going into the rooty / rocky entrance to the Picnic Bench trail in Bristol. Instantly lost control and flew over the bars, came unclipped instantly and escaped major injury but cuts, scrapes and bruises all over.
I briefly though about returning to tubes until I got multiple punctures running tubed on the next ride.
Going to use proper TR tyres now and keep a closer eye on the pressure.
tyre, rim, pressure?
never happened to me when running ghetto, if i can get the ZTR rims to work i'd expect they're less likely to do this.
DOne it when I first started riding. Came of a lip at the end of a ride into a cobbled lane.
Mavic really need to work on making the rims grip stone.
Tyre was too low pressure. It was tubed to be fair not tubeless but I have had a dodgy NN come off with a bad bead tubeless. Wasn't riding at the time. It was in the back of the car. Messy.
what tyre and what rim? there are certain combos that really don't play so well together.
I'm running Flows and have had various tyres let go suddenly with a BANG and sudden loss of control, either from heavy impacts (usually rear) or hard cornering on the front. Both advantages and Rubber Queens, around 30psi. Can be scary!
If fact, had one go on Friday night - managed to hold it but gave me a bit of a fright. Managed to catch it on camera too! From 6:00 on here:
scary. so how do you stop this, find a tight tyre/rim combo and keep pressure up? pray?
I had this happen before on flow rims. Never had ad issue with UTS rims and maxxis tyres.
Crossmax sx and Easton haven/havocs been bullet proof. They hold up to jumping and dh fine.
Time to resurrect a classic.....

Enjoy. 😀
Maxxis and ZTR rims 20 psi no issues here. I do replace the sealent every 6 months and over pressure to 40 psi to seat them when I fit them over night. NN are way to thin IMHO.
Just an update from me - sorry for the delay.
Tyres were NN "tubeless ready" on some rebranded DT Swiss rims with stans strips.
I strongly suspect the pressures were too low. I hadnt checked them in a while - and they only go one way.
My lesson turned out kind of expensive in the end: new hanger, mech, shorts, top, lots of non adherent dressings (mis-labeled imo) but could have been worse!
Anyway, lesson learnt and glad I wasnt the only one.
