[Closed] Noob fixed gear/SPD advice needed

My new fixed gear Langster arrives tomorrow and I need to decide what pedals to fit.

I have some Shimano SPDs from my mountain bike and would assume these will be fine. However, being fairly new to fixed gear riding (I have only done one session at the Manchester Velodrome) would using SPDs be a bit dangerous on the road? Or am I being nervous for no reason?!!!

Any advice/experiences/suggestions?

Cheers

spds are a good idea, using flat pedals is not a good idea if you want to go anywhere fast imo.

I permanently zip tie my feet to the pedals - improved my trackstanding and general "nu skool kool"ness no end....

(SPDs are great - you need some form of foot retention on a fixie..)

Preferred SPDs on my fixed. Double sided are easier to use when "learning".

Have fun!

I think a few laps round the local car park are in order!

You definately need some kind of clipless pedal or good old-fashioned clips and straps. You will find that you need to pull up on the pedals to get up any kind of gradient, (so disregard my advice if you live in Norfolk)

I did a road ride fixed with SPDs then a few commutes. Changed back to toe straps because I robbed the pedals for the MTB, and I hate it now. Main problem is getting your feet back in once you have stopped at lights etc. Plus, as mentioned above, you can't pull sick skidz (as easily) with toe straps/flats.

Note, taking ones feet out of spd's whilst riding fastish downhill on a fixie with no brakes isn't a good idea. Matching ones feet with the rotating pedals is very very frightening as a fixie-novice ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
