Live segments on Garmin 530 (for an IT dummy)

I get the impression Strava live segments on a Garmin is one of those needlessly flakey features that Garmin seem to excel at, but nonetheless, what is the 'standard' way to get them working?

Can you star and upload loads of segments, and whenever following a route with those segments on it, they automatically pop up?

Or do you need to 'star' segments within the route when you plot it on Strava and before uploading?

I feel I've done both and they still only appear intermittently.

I know that downhill (even 'flat' segments at -0.1% 🙄) don't show up which is frustrating as those are typically my favourite sorts of segment (lots of good twisty 10 minute efforts around me).

I’m pretty sure any segments I star on Strava show up on my 530. Doesn’t matter whether I’m following a route or just approach the segment when out riding and using the Garmin to record the ride. I get an alert that I’m near, alert if I don’t follow the segment etc.

Shame they did away with it on downhill segments as my main use was to help me find little trails that I wasn’t quite sure where they were. I sure as hell wasn’t looking at the Garmin on my way down

BUT check whether your Garmin is set to use Strava segments or Garmin segments. It’s a one or the other option

That would be excellent (I'd rather not have to plot/upload/follow every little evening ride) but I was certain you had to be following a route for whatever reason.

Yeah, definitely set to use Strava segments, although I can't synch directly from phone to Garmin, need to via Garmin Connect. Wonder if that's causing the issue

Definitely not, it nags me about live segments all the time. The climb graph thing, that needs to be part of a route you are following but not the live segments

Possibly, why no phone sync?

I don’t just get the live segment nag on my 530 I also get it on my Fenix 6 if I use that to record a ride and I have never used that to follow a route. In either case they are connected to my phone while I ride

Haha! Mine only nags me about missed turns that I haven't missed. Will spend about half an hour telling me to do a U-turn before giving up in a huff 😂

Do you still need a Strava premium account for the live segments to work?
