Age and injury seem to be catching up with me and one of my knees can ache quite a lot after a ride. Oddly more on my hardtail.  Can anyone recommend a knee support that's good for riding in without rubbing the hell out of my leg?

Buy a good full suspension Ebike.

I'm serious btw.

Go and see a Physio and try and work out what is causing the problem.

Using a support will only make the issue worse as you are weakening the muscle / ligaments in the effected area by wearing a support

Yeah I should (and will) it's just that I have a week in the Lakes from Saturday and wanted to limit the ache from multiple days of riding and walking.

My mates knees are pretty ****ed, he's fit, but being a brickie for 30 years and breaking pretty much everything he could racing moto x means he is in pain after a days hard biking.

He bought a FS e-bike 11 days ago, and has been out on it for 10 of those days.

So, basically, what geex says.

If you are insistent on getting one, make sure it's got a hole at the front so it's not forcing your patella into the cartilage (or bone as in my knees).

See physio asap, but it's probably something weird about the hardtail fit/setup that exacerbates the underlying problem.

A support will only mask the real problem. Sports physio or bike fit issues probably need lookIng at. I had knee pain and got a (roadie) bike fit. That fit has been mimicked on my MTB to an extent and I don’t suffer from the knee pain any more.

I've just had a knee replacement, in the run - up to the op I discussed support with my physio who was also a mountainbiker. According to him, knee supports are not capable of providing enough support to be worthwhile. He reckons the main benefit of supports is in keeping your knees warm

I do have a FS bike as well and it does seem better on that. I'll have to find a decent physio in the next few weeks.

Always had issues with one of my knees.

Going to flats, tinkering with seat height and (importantly) using oval chainrings have basically "cured" the issue. No pain/ aching now.
