Woohoooooooooo. I'm spending my birthday traipsing across the Field of Despair like a refugee who's been forced, at gunpoint, to push a bike repeatedly up a hill. Hope it snows again 😀

In finally after navigating the website who kept telling me they had my details, then giving me, then telling me the ones they gave me were wrong, then asking me to re-join. they eventually took my money though - i bet the race is easier

in my case I mean race in the loosest possible terms

We're getting live stats as the entries come in and it would appear that some of you are suffering from gender confusion.

Before confirming your entry take a peek down the front of your undies.

A simple guide is as follows... Last chicken drummer at the BBQ = Male.

I'm in but entering on a "smart" phone was stressfull and longer than the race itself.

It's as though British cycling are trying to keep people off their bikes by giving then hundreds of pages to go through.

Please use someone else next year please

The limit is defined by the look on the BC race official’s face when 300 bodies line up at the start of the first climb.

Red – Not enough entries
Pink – The right amount
White – Too many

We scored a “white” last year which turned to a “pink” once everybody was moving.

Ride what you like, it won't make the Somme any better. Suffer fest all the way. Utterly excellent, only missed one year of this and I will never miss it again.

loadsa fat blokes
all stood at the front of the grid last year in front of all the fast lads, making it an excellent handicap/slalom race for the first half lap. 😀

'Fat blokes at the back of the starting grid.'
I thought it was the queue for the pie stall, honest. 😥

Have we got any 'slebs' this year?
I think we should invite Lisa Riley - We could do a 'spot the difference' compo.

I'm hopeful the motorbike bloke will be back. We got loads of women offering to marshal last year after that one went public.

Adding a lap each year would be a good aim for me, going for a full 4 laps for HTN4. Admittedly I could have done another this year, but it had started snowing and I live in the hills in the Peaks so I lurked in the trees at the end.

Entered! Perhaps i'll do it on an appropriate bike rather than a 5inch full suss with 2.4 tyres.

Any chance of making the cyclocross mincers step aside while they mince down the first descent? 😉

Can anyone give a quick synopsis of what the race is like? Is it do as many 3.5 mile laps as you can in 2 hours? And is it as hard and awful as some of you are making out? What's the terrain like, I only have a full susser and don't want to be 'over biked'

Can anyone give a quick synopsis of what the race is like?

Yes.

Is it do as many 3.5 mile laps as you can in 2 hours?

Yes.

And is it as hard and awful as some of you are making out?

It is as hard and awful as you want to make it. It depends on whether you want to turn yourself inside out and try for 6 laps and go round in the bunch and do 3 or 4. With 300 riders on the course you are never going to riding alone for any period of time.

What's the terrain like, I only have a full susser and don't want to be 'over biked'

The lap consists of

Start

Field of Despair - Nasty
MTFU Hill - Nasty
Red grade trail centre berms - Not nasty
The Chin - Short techinical DH
The climb - A climb
Prepataion H - Short techinical DH
Blue grade trail centre stuff with a couple of berms - Easy
The water splash - A water splash
Viaduct Climb - A climb up and over a Victorian railway viaduct
The B@stard - Near vertical muddy carry

Finish

Repeat

A full susser will be fine. Better on some bits, worse on others. The winner will be on a CX because he will have raced all season and will take it seriously.

Then you have to factor in the brass band, the samba band, the excellent catering. the pi55 taking, the enthusiatic marshals and the banter. It will be cold. You will probably get covered in mud, or snow. You will enjoy it.

If it was that bad it wouldn't sell out. If it was too easy it wouldn't sell out either. The plan is to host a race where the competitors feel like they have taken part in something a bit different to their usual Saturday morning ride no matter whether they finish top 10 or bottom 10.

HTH
