So.

My bike has a (no brand) zero stack 44mm headset for a 1 1/8 straight steerer tube.

AFAICT, it basically does not have cups you push in rather the bearings sit on a lip within the frames headtube.

Last time i had the forks off for repair, i noticed that the bearings were caged balls.

Can anyone point me to a suitable caged replacement bearing? i have seen some 44mm cartridge bearings for other headsets - can i swap one of those in?

Googling "zero stack 1 1/8th replacement bearing" does not seem to help.

Cheers

G

As far as I know you can't substitute the caged balls for a cartridge bearing as the cup is designed to be used as a bearing race.

Although caged balls should be on some kind of replaceable cup. Only integrated headsets with the bearings in the frame should be cartridge type.

My search for a 2008 Marin rocky Ridge came up with a normal 1 1/8th FSA headset with caged balls.

For a threaded headset you buy a pack of loose balls the same size, stick them in place with grease and reassemble (yours is an Aheadset, but I've not done it with one of those). Use one too few balls (i.e. leave a small gap) rather than one too many. Check that they will stay within the race
You might also be able to unpick the cage and refill it with new balls

If this bike is yours - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/mountain-bikes/product/review-marin-rocky-ridge-08-28788/

Then you need a standard 1 1/8 external headset. Something like this:
