Just wondered if anyone knew where i can just buy stantions alone for a fox float rl 140 travel fork, my left station has worn away at the bottom due to dirt and grit/mud getting inside the seals, i got told by a shop it would cost me £130 quid for a whole new crown as they are sold like that, is it the same for every shop ? ive never had this problem before so advice needed if poss thx 🙂
that's how they are supplied everywhere - the stanchions are pressed into the crown at manufacture and cannot be supplied any other way.
they are the same price wherever you go to.
it's a regular problem unfortunately, you need to REALLY keep on top of seal maintenance.
Well I am confident you could change them. However you'll need to be able to access liquid nitrogen, because that is how they are fitted
ill go with cp id rather get it done by someone who knows what they are doing
left stantion always wears first according to my lbs due to braking forces on the leg rather than lack of maintenance
strange, well at least im not the only one, ill sort it after xmas im sure they are fine for now thx guys
well at least im not the only one
No you're not, not by a long way.
The only permenant fix for this problem is generally known as 'Rock Shox'....
😉
lol!
I've got exactly the same problem with a set of 2004 32 TALAS.Left hand stanchion badly worn on its inside face, but as they are fitted to my 'winter' bike, which I hate spending owt on,i'll just live with it.
yeh thats exactly where it is on mine on the inside, im willing to pay the price but most people just live with it that cause more problems in the future
keep ontop of maintinence is the key.

Yeah, let's all replace our fox forks with something just as expensive that has worse damping and doesn't last any longer!

Was going to say something but I have been beaten to it 😉
Plus RS only works for month, before needing news bushings

I think you should go check out the prices my friend..... 🙂

Wrong. The tide of opinion and fact is against you there mate. 🙂
Well I have a 2004 Talas with no wear on the stanchions after zero servicing, and a year old Pike with wear on the stanchions despite regular servicing.
The Pike is a far better fork though.
braking forces and twist may have an effect, but the rubbing is directly caused by grit and mud/crap under the seal. I do wonder sometimes if the twisting force from the brake does just open the seal slightly and allow crap in.
I do hear that it's only the 2008 and later TALAS forks which were any good from a damping point of view.

Yeah it would never happen with Rockshox would it

Btw I have now stripped these, cleaned them up and fixed the stanchions with nail varnish - seem to be fine and no longer leaking oil, but they haven't had any serious abuse.
I run rockshox pikes and have none of the above problems and it's not like I look after them, no stanchion wear and the bushings are just fine after a year of abuse. They are not without their little niggles though.
On the fox side of things mate of mine was advised to leave his bike (and forks) upside down as the oil in the legs helped keep the bushings/seals lubricated.
Grumm, Nail varnish. Tell me how? I've got the same prob on my left upper.
Read about it on here I think - nail varnish on the worn bits then sand off the excess with fine sandpaper to leave an even finish. Put new oil in at the same time.
Seems to have worked ok but time will tell. Few other people said they had done it with no issues - might need re-doing after a few months.
Here we go again 🙄
For the record, I've got some 2001 floats that are fine having been serviced once, some 2007 Rebas that I serviced myself after 9 months light use - some mild wear to stanchion by the upper seals, some 2009 Revelations that I'm servicing regularly... hopefully lesson learned!
Oh, and no you can't buy the stanchions separately 😉

Yep. Friend of mine did this too. Just the once though because her brakes went all mushy as a result and she had to pay to have them bled....

Not as often as it does to Foxes. 🙂
6 months ago I'd have agreed completely with PP but I've seen lots of posts about poor RS forks this year. Floodgate problems, leaking problems, bushing problems etc. Fox seem generally fine except the seals, which need tlc.
What's the worst that can happen if you carry on running worn stanchions anyway? Yes you'll knacker the bushings faster but they're probably shot anyway. Keep the lowers topped up with oil, service the seals every 3-4 rides (20min job) and they should limp on for another 12months at least.
Zip tie your brake levers to the bar to prevent air bubbles migrating from the lever reservoir into the hose, btw
Hi , this post has probably been round all the doors by now but I have fell prey to lack of cleaning on my Rock Shox Revelations . Ignoring the slight stanchion wear meant that lots of grit and subsiquiently water got into the left leg and the other week I noticed that it had actually corroded thru making the forks scrap . Got a set of Fox Floats now but I will be paying a lot more attention to the seals etc . Will try and post some pics of the carnage.
Not really fair to keep bashing fox, Rockshox have plenty of their own issues, ie, leaking mc topcaps, twisted lowers, worn stantions,2step failure amongst others, not any better than fox IMO or more reliable, you have to look after any high end fork to keep it working properly,
