I really should get some because I couldn't afford to replace half of it if it were stolen. Are there any companies that insure that don't make you keep the bike in a panic room, cemented up to the handlebars just to be covered...completely negating the need for paying them in the first place?

M&S home insurance covers bikes as if they were any other household article (£4,000 limit per item - which covers [i]most[/i] bikes easily enough).

I have recent experience of needing to use their services and have to say it was pretty painless.

I don't need the home insurance though. I live with the folks and they have that already.

Ask your folks to add it to their policy as a specific item, so that is covered for the correct amount, and away from the home. You will find that included for cover for bikes does not cover bikes worth more than £500 in many cases......
