So I have a set of brand new Spank Oozy 395+ 29” rims with an internal width of 35mm. Planning on running 29 x 3.0 Maxxis minion front and a Chronicle rear. Maxxis state minimum 40 internal will they be ok on the 35mm rims

IIRC 2:1 is about the maximum recommended so it should be fine, 35x2=70, and most tyres are optimistic in their sizing.Worst case you can't run them at very low pressures as they'll squirm more.

Would imagine they’ll feel pretty awful. Ran the Chronicle on a 50mm rim and it was pretty rounded even then. Could end up looking like a light bulb on 35mm.
They will fit and you’d be able to ride them but I’d imagine you’d need a decent amount of pressure to stop the sidewalls folding in the corners.

Mate has a 27.5 3.0 Chronicle on his Solaris. That's on a Hunt Wide Rim which is 35mm I think. He loves it, tyre profile looks okay to me.

I ran Bomboloni 3” on 35mm internal and getting a pressure that didn’t simultaneously result in folding the tyre or pinging off stuff was next to impossible. I’ve put 2.2 tyres on the same rim now and everything about the tyre is better. Grip, comfort, support. Everything.

Does it fit? Yes
Is it a good idea? No

I was hoping that by running 40mm external with 35mm internal I would not be isolating myself to narrower trail tyres if I wanted to run them. Looking at the Velocity Dually it’s 39mm internal, is 2mm either side going to make such a phenomenal difference?

As above, it'll work, but you lose the main benefits of the big tyre when you have to pump it up hard enough not to squirm.
For non agressive riding it's still good. I used a 3.0 Knard on a Stans flow rim a fair bit last year for offroad touring / gravel sort of thing and it was actually great. Lots of cush to protect the hands, fast rolling round profile. It wasn't getting stuffed into berms and ruts at speed so all good.

May only be 4 or 5mm but as a percentage it's a bit.

For what's it worth I run a Chronicle on a 40mm internal rim and it's just dandy.

Rabbit holes are real tricky to come by since they went out of production anyway, if you fancy a true 29+ option halo vapour or stans hugo is a good option

I’ll just run with the Oozy rims , see how I get on and if all else fails I’ll change them. As the Krampus is a keeper.

I've been running 3" 29+ tyres on 35mm rims for 7 years - never really felt it's been a problem, nice round tyre profile means they run fast on hardpack, but plenty of grip in the soft stuff when you need it.

Given that ten years ago we were running 17mm rims (and not giving a shit about how wide they were) with 2.3" tyres without any bother I suspect you'll be fine.

I run 3 inch chupacabras on 35mm rims on my stache personally I think it’s fine but you’ll never get a definitive answer.  For everyone person like me there’s another who will say don’t do it...

Ten years ago, I bought the 2.35 Hans Dampf when it came out, and very quickly realised they were too wide for my 17mm Mavic rims, I was rolling and burping them constantly.

If the OP wants to run 3.0 tyres, then he most likely has low pressures in mind, and having rims that are too narrow won't allow that.

I both hope it does, and possibly that it doesn't...

Have just found a 5mm spacer for my rear hub, turning it into a 135mm from a 130mm (frame can take either). I'm really hoping this creates enough space at the other end to stop my 40mm tyres from rubbing.

I doubt it will though, in which case I'm really hoping that I don't notice the 5mm difference in tyre size as I go down to a 35mm... 🙁

I'm running Chupacabras on Velocity P35, that are internally 35mm.

Going down to 7PSI, but I'm less than 11st.

No issues for me, all nice and dandy...

If you are fairly lightweight and after low pressure it would be all fine.

Cheers!
I.

I run a Chronicle and a 3" DHF on a 35mm id rim on the front my rigid bike, admittedly it's more bike packing and cruising than Rampage but it's fine. Might be a different story on the rear. If I was to buy a new rim I would probably go up to 40mm but I haven't died....yet.

Does anyone know if the 60tpi Chronicle can be run tubeless or is it only the 120tpi. Also anyone know where to get one?

Minion for the front and a Chronicle ordered for the rear, so just going to run them on the Spank Oozy 395+ rims once back from the wheel builder.

I would say, if running a hardtail with a suspension fork, try and find a 2.8 tire for the rear, where a higher pressure is required for pinchflat protection anyway, and get a true 2.6 for the front (WTB, Bontrager SE5: a virtual copy of DHF).

https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/biking/mountain-bike-tires/bontrager-se5-team-issue-2-6
(They have it on a 30mm rim and it is very rounded, with a large ‘gap’, so 35mm should be great)

I run the minion DHF 2.8 on an internal 40mm rim, and would not want to go narrower in the front.
As mentioned, you would need a high pressure to prevent squirm with aggressive riding (which I assume you are doing since you chose the Minion), and also the side knobs will end up further down the sides than they were designed to be. This will increase the ‘gap’ betweeen center and side knobs, so you have no cornering traction at moderate lean angles.

If you are running fully rigi, then I would keep the 3.0 and buy a wider front rim.

I thought this thread would be about reach. In which case it apparently makes all the difference in the world.

Damned if I can tell 5mm difference though 🤔
