[Closed] Crests or 717s. About to pull the trigger but on which?

Right then...

Decided I'd like to treat my Ghost AMR to some well bling (well at least to me) rims. Currently on factory issue Alex 44s on XT hubs.

Have narrowed it down to either 717s or crests on proIIs. I am not a heavy chap and a bit of xc mincer these days. Have a hardtail for hacking round the woods so the ghost is for bigger days out and things like the dyfi, tour de bn, enduros and other such race days.

So thinking crests or 717s

Was about to go 717 but a little voice in my head said crests are lighter, stronger and at 19mm might bring up 2.25 tyres as a better shape.

But then I run Schwalbe's with tubes and some folk have a nightmare getting tyres on and off. This would annoy me. No intention of running tubeless anytime soon.

Can't afford proper bling so suggestions of king hubs etc are beyond the budget!

What do you reckon?

Looking forward to being persuaded that option C is the answer...

i run xc717's on my cannondale and arch ex's on my yeti. i also ran crests on my turner flux.

i would take crests over xc717's every day. they can be run tubeless out of the box (717's can be run tubeless as i am doing, but it takes some effort to get it right).

if you are a bit heavy, the brand new arch ex's are well worth a look. they are broadly halfway between the crests and the flows. you can't get them as ready-built hope hoops, but merlin will build them up to order in double quick time and for a very good price...

No experience of Crests, but I have Schwalbe's (NN) on 717's

No bother at all, with or without tubes.

Crests are wider which gives a nicer tyre profile and will take a larger tyre, I've had NN 2.25 on 717s and Crests, definately felt better on Crests.

Crests all the way - but you sound like you already know this, really? I've never had an issue fitting or removing tyres from Crests (Maxxis and Kenda, generally - still can't believe the number of threads on this topic). They do support 2.25" tyres much nicer than 717s - the very low sidewall height of these second generation Stan's rims makes this even more pronounced.

All IME / IMO, naturally. ๐Ÿ™‚

More Crests here. Currently with NObby Nic 2.4 and Advantage 2.25, both pairs running tubeless without problems

Crests and Nics here too, zero issues, no bother getting any kind of Schwalbe tyres on them for me.

I shouldn't have read this thread, I've now got the urge to replace my 717's.

The seed is planted and it won't go away...

Schwalbes on crests aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggg aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgggg with extra arrrrrrggg.

Please sir, I can't do it.

However, a larsen went straight on and I have an crossmark and an advantage lying around which I can try this evening. So looks like a possible return to maxxis for a while and then ponder using my schwalbes as ghetto tubless further down the line.

Tried the whole get it in the dip of the bead thing and just could not get my ralph snakeskin on!
