I usually commute on my hardtail, but am getting fed up with it for various reasons. One of which being the wear and tear of riding on roads in all waethers and all seasons. So, I have been deliberating over a singlespeed commuter.I don't really want to spend a lot on it, and would ideally build one up myself from some old, disused bike. ANy suggestions on how to get hold of an old, but serviceable frame? Also suggestions on a complete ss wouldn't go amiss.

Keep an eye on the classifieds... There are bargains to be had.

Hilary Stone is good for frames but so is ebay. Saw a nice looking Wilier Toni Bevilaqua in a shop today. Pompino?

This - bough one for Teen1 for £125 (which was a steal, I admit). Otherwise, Kona Paddy Wagon (I ride one of those).

Carrera Subways are always very cheap and excellent commuters. Or an old 531 steel frame, that are no longer a steal.
