There is one problem though...
No-one actually found him a decent cheap light... The reason it's a problem is that i can't find mine and ended up buying some cheap Ebay Chinese torches last night....
But i could do with better (but still cheap) ones potentially...
😀
But i'll start another thread as this one has gone all warm and fuzzy.

Ah, I thought in amongst all the offers there was a couple of light donation offers.... 🙂

There was... but that doesn't help me needing a light 😉
Alpkit Boson. There you go.
Was going to skip this thread as I thought it was just another cheap chinese light thread, but the word 'depressed' peaked my interest (as someone who has had there own issues with depression). Very glad that I did - this is why I love this forum. Great to see a community coming together to help out one of their own.
I hope that you can find some time for yourself to get out on the bike. Cycling certainly had a massive part in helping me overcome my own battle with depression. I might be able to help out with some parts from the spares bin - what do you need?
I still can't believe this thread is still on the first page! The last couple of days have been unbelievable, and then it would slowly fade into the undergrowth of STW towers.
Thankyou all so much, you wouldn't believe how grateful i am for your help, support and donations.
A lot of you are asking about other bike parts. I am not wanting to take advantage as i have said before and not one to ask for anything. So, i will give you the spec of my 2 bikes and let you decide if they need upgrading. I have said before, the fettling is more appealing as a way of doing something constructive.
Thankyou all again, this all truly means the world to me.
Bike 1 - Norco Threshold A2, standard spec apart from some road continental tyres:
https://www.evanscycles.com/norco-threshold-a2-2015-cyclocross-bike-EV211814
Bike 2 - 17" silver Cove Stiffee
Pike u-turn coil forks
26" Superstar wheelset
Bontrager o/s handlebars
Token grips
Sunline v1 stem 50mm
FSA orbit headset
Deore rear shifter
Deore chainset (removed 2 of the rings to make it a single front)
Raceface evolve seatpost
WTB saddle
Superstar seat clamp
Sram chain and cassette
XT rapid rise rear mech - this is the only thing i have thought about changing as the road bike has a normal rear mech. But hadn't (at the time) decided whether to stay with 9 speed or not.
I had built up a trek remedy a couple of years back and that had all the better parts on it (saint brakes that worked, icetech rotors, XTR rear mech, Raceface Atlas bars and stem, diabolus seatpost,Raceface NW chainring, XT cranks, spoon saddle etc) but had to sell it due to the circumstances without it ever being ridden. Didn't get anywhere near what it cost to build, still regret it today.
26" wheels ? WTF.... 😉
Ref light, got one ready to send out. (Exposure Spark) and a Lezyne rear light. Not the best but ok for road use.
Gnusmas, should be with you next week buddy. Working 12 HR shifts doesn't give me much chance to get to the post office.
Amazing total, saw this early yesterday and just checked back to see how it was going. Restores faith in mankind and also reinforces why I use this forum as an oracle on anything. Quite frankly if it hasn't been discussed on STW then you probably don't need to know about it.
😯
Wasn't expecting this to happen!
Bumpity - donated - bumped.
Hope this brings more than led generated light into your life
Bump.
Post again if anything goes amiss once you've been for a ride and I'll look at what spare bits I have. No doubt others will too.
I've been beaten to the punch on helping you with your brake problem, bunged some pennies your way instead. Is the bike you're going to sort for your lad a roady or mtb?
I hope you can ride this wave of goodwill to easier times for all of you.
Thankyou all again for your generosity. Really really appreciated.
Demelitia - thankyou for tour donation, and no worries about the brakes.
His [s]boat anchor[/s] bike is a halfords x-rated mtb type thing something or other. It is quite ropey, but functionable. While he never showed an interest there was no point in anything better. He has developed an interest in mtb and recently been thinking a better bike is overdue.
Our 8 year old lad has asked for a lighter bike for his 9th birthday in September, so looks like he is gaining interest too.
And the other week our 4 year old daughter decides she wants to ride without stabilisers cause she is a big girl now.
A bump for the morning.

Thanks for the bump Sandwich.
Thought i would have a look to see how it's going, the amount is staggering!
I think we are well and truly beyond lights, this is definitely for a scooter/wheelchair.
Unless i decide to light my bike up like a Vespa, although handling might then be an issue.
I cannot thank all of you enough, i am unbelievably gobsmacked.
This is great. I can't begin to describe how good it makes me feel to think that a forum of relative strangers can produce such a response. Hopefully its a turning point for you and your family.
Thankyou teamslug,i hope it is too.
Just to update you all, we have an appointment with a physiotherapist tomorrow who is also a wheelchair fit specialist, due to a cancellation. He said he will be able to customise a chair (to an extent) to what she needs it to do in comfort and support and be able to advise us on the type of chair needed.
Sounds expensive, but worth having the appointment as at least we know what to look for in a wheelchair.
My wife is questioning why are we going, we can't afford one, i don't want to get my hopes up if they can get one i like etc etc etc.
I feel a bit mean not saying anything but also looking forward to a surprise for her.
Thanks for the bump Junky.
It was at £600 when i last had a peek earlier today, can't believe it is still going up.
Thankyou everyone.
GNUSMAS - good luck with the physiotherapist hope it goes well, keep us posted.
Just looked - Broken the £700 barrier! Whoop!! Its fantastic what we as a community can achieve for a fellow in need. Proud of us! 😀
Just got back from physio, not the best news but could be a lot worse. She is in a lot of pain after the assessment, will update you all later.
Thanks once again for your support,i am extremely proud of all of you too.

Hi again.
Sorry to hear that.
Hopefully after a bit of rest the pain following the assessment,at least, will subside a little.
Keep us all updated bud and hope you all have a "relaxing" evening as it where. Or as near to it as it may come.
£700 is unbelievable, thankyou all so much, i am truly touched. Apart from killing me, i am sure my wife will be thrilled when she finds out.
A combination of the pain, tiredness and medication meant she was flat out by 7 oclock. Very stressful day all round, now battling kids and bedtime.
Update, right, here we go.
Physio assessment went well, she has been measured up for a wheelchair. He said a properly fitted manual wheelchair would be a lot more beneficial and better initially until the course of physio is well underway. How long the physio will continue will depend on how long her body will continue to develop. 6 more weekly sessions already booked.
Between this and the latest MRI we have been told the damage is permanent.
Unfortunately, she has lost all sensation in her left arm from just under the shoulder to her fingertips, her complete left side and the whole of her left leg and foot. The right side is stronger, but overall about 60% strength.
He is hopeful of an overall improvement. But, he has said that it will not improve her mobility. His aim is to help with pain management by retraining her body to cope with normal movement more efficiently.
When she gets nearer to this point, he suggests looking at powered wheelchairs. What he said makes sense. What type of chair she needs now may not be what she needs in a few months time. When he has got her to the point of managing the pain better and hopefully the muscles are a bit stronger, it will give a better indication of what is needed. He said if we were to buy one now then it may not be entirely what we need for the long term.
Also we need to think of what we want it to do. Does it need to be able to come apart to fit in the boot of a car? Does it need to be roadworthy? Apparently some are road legal and need to be taxed!
There is a lot to think about and a lot of research to be done. All without giving too much away.
And i thought buying bikey bits was difficult!
Boy thats tough
Hang in there and be a great Dad to your kids, whilst being there for her as well
Not an easy thing to deal with. Hopefully some decent physio and care will get things moving forward quickly .
Bet you havent had a holiday in years either. I hear the Big Bike Bash is just the thing for kids and has a superb off road wheel chair.
Thanks, tough to hear and will be tough going at times but we will get through this together.
No, haven't had a holiday in 6 years or so. Still waiting to have a honeymoon after over 9 years. Big bike bash, sounds good. Kids would probably love it and i am sure my wife would, obviously i would. Don't think logistically it would be possible 🙁
Will have to have a look at next year maybe?
Well i am having a really bad day today. Have had the migraine from hell since being woken up this morning at 6.20 this morning, it's not shifting at all. Doesn't help when i have so much housework to do as well as trying to entertain the kids.
My wife hasn't left her bed due to the pain after yesterday, and 4 bored kids not being able to go out because the weather is horrible.
On the up side, a mate of mine has given me a 10 speed shifter and rear mech for my Stiffee after upgrading to an 11 speed setup. He had no idea things were as bad as this so thought he would try and cheer me up a bit after reading the thread.
So i need to get a cassette, chain and possibly front ring. Rear mech is a short cage, so what cassette would i (eventually) need to get to make this work? Will the front 32t 9 speed middle ring work with a 10 speed chain? I assume the superstar rear wheel will take a 10 speed cassette without any problems.
Thankyou all again.
IME 9 speed ring is fine with a 10 speed chain
What front ring do you need - I have XTR 9 speed but no thick/thin to donate
as for range depends what you ride but you will need a bigger mech anyway - not sure what the range is that a short copes with but it wont allow for a massive rear cassette
Big mountain bike is 30 front 42 rear
Local bike is
32 front 36 rear - never need the 36 tbh- i can SS locally- but Mrs JY rides it
£705 is a good total I will work out how they give it to me and how long it takes and then e-mail you all the details and sort something out.
I will then post the evidence you got it up here or you can just confirm it assuming STW trusts us/ whatever others think appropriate
Thanks for the info Junky, very helpful. I have a 9 speed deore front ring, just wandering if it would work with a 10 speed chain. I thought maybe someone would be able to clarify what i would need to get to make it all work. You and everyone else have done more than enough already, just some questions i had.
Yes, £705 is an unbelievable total, a massive thankyou to everyone that has donated. I was gobsmacked when it reached £260 and now this, it is truly mind blowing. It really means a lot and will be a huge help to get a chair for my wife.
Happy to go with the general consensus from STW on how to go about this. Haven't got a problem either way. Likewise, i will post evidence/pics when we get things sorted this end.
So, after a very heated argument tonight i revealed all to mrs gnusmas.
A stunned silence, eyes welling up followed up with
"Why would anyone do this for me? No one knows me or what we are going through, i don't understand"
I told her this place is like a community and i have seen wonderful things happen here before.
Her reply, although still lost for words was
"I still don't understand, i can't believe it, Thankyou"
When the shock subsides, i am sure there will be a message from her. Until then, i can only thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.
😉 Happy - Just doing what we do best, Stepping up 🙂 You're welcome mrs gnusmas.
Really glad she was pleased, hope it helps to relive the tension slighlty.
Gnusmas, you should get a parcel today or tomorrow 🙂
Glad you revealed all to mrs gnusmas. That was the clincher for me to add to the bike/buggy fund.
Best of luck to you both and I hope that things get better and better from this point onwards.
Also donated now - if we give this a little more time surely we could make £1k?
It sounds like the help from the forum should help you and your wife - amazing effort all round.
Donated, good luck with it all gnusmas 🙂
😯 I honestly thought the thread was done and dusted, i was over the moon with the total.
Now this, i can't believe it is still going up. Thankyou all so much, i am so grateful as my wife is.
Better day today, i think the air was cleared a lot last night. She is already talking about types of chair and taking note of other people's in town today as we managed to get out for a couple of hours. A glimmer of hope has appeared in her for the first time since last October just before her operation. It is really nice to see, that to me is the best part and it is all down to your generosity. Thankyou so much, it means the world to me.
Monkeysfeet, will keep an eye out and email you when received, thankyou.
Thankyou all so much again.
To answer boring technical question- front ring doesn't care how many rear cogs you've got. Chains have the same internal width, it's only thickness of the outer plates that reduces as number of gears goes up. My £££ 11 speed SRAM Red road rings are marked 10/11, and I've got a '9 speed' chainring on a 10speed MTB set up.
Glad you have finally told her....I think I've got some dust in my eye!!
Thanks for the info crashtestmonkey, really helpful.
The dust clouds have been circling me for about a week, i know what you mean teamslug.
muppetWrangler, Joebristol and Stevied - thankyou for your donations, really appreciate it.
Joebristol - according to the crowdfunding page there is still 20 days to go. There is a possibility of your total in that time.
Only just seen this and have now donated a bit. I bloody love this place sometimes. For a bunch of argumentative ****puffins we're actually a real, solid community. Big virtual hugs to the lot of you 🙂
OP - I sincerely hope things are looking up for you and your family. If you're feeling really down don't be afraid to seek medical help. I put it off for years and it did no good.
Come on STW we are so close to £1k
If you still need lights I've got a 2200 (alleged) lumen magicshine and 2 batteries I'd be happy to post you. Works fine, but got myself something newer. Let me know if you want them, thought I think you may be buried in lights by now!
