Due to an incorrect listing on wiggle, I've ended up with a boost GX Eagle groupset for my non-boost Transition Smuggler frame. I could just send it back & re-order the correct groupset but a) I'm struggling to find the correct one (170mm) in stock and b) it looks like when they are in stock they will be a lot more than the ~ £290 I paid for the ones I have currently.
So I'm wondering will I even notice the difference if I just use the boost cranks? From what I can tell it's a 3mm offset difference, what impact will this realistically have?
The offset is built into the chainring so that's the only part you'd need to exchange if the chainline proved to be problematic. It would only cause a problem in the biggest sprocket if at all
There will be 3mm difference. The chain ring should be marked up with the offset on the back. On a non boost frame it will give a bit more clearance, 3mm, on the chainstay.
Or just sell the chainring and buy a non-boost one.
Great, I think I'll just fit it then. Thanks all.
I looked at this and while ago and iirc the boost chainline for a single ring is in between the chainlines for a double and similar to the 2nd on a triple (or something like that). It is really only an issue if you go the other way (non boost crank on boost rear end with a large 10-11 spd cassette because the chain nagke means it rubs on the next gear up). One opinion was it might even be better because if you they to ride on the smaller rings more than the big it puts the chain straighter where you use it more
That didn't work.
Anyway there is a new gx eagle non boost chainring in the, classifieds.
