[Closed] Small front rack that mounts to mid-fork blade eyelets

[#10511482]

Looking for a small front rack for my CX bike. It has rack eyelets half way down the fork. I have mudguards mounted at the eyelets at the bottom of the fork so no room for mounting a rack.
It's a disk brake fork so no canti/v-brake bosses for mounting either.

I have seen a Velo Orange one: https://www.velovitality.co.uk/products/velo-orange-randonneur-front-rack But it's pretty expensive.

Are there any other options? If it was black that would be excellent as the rest of the bike is all black.

Bear in mind that the VO rack you linked to will only work with eyelets positioned correctly for it and they'd be higher than the normal 'half way' point of low-rider eyelets which is where most 'mid fork' eyelets are.

See here for one fitted, the eyelets on this fork a couple of inches above normal low-rider position.

There are other more universal mounting racks around in the same style form Nitto and Compass, neither of which are cheap!
There are bigger and cheaper options out there though but most small front racks in the Rando style you linked to are both expensive and more often than not designed to work with specifically positioned eyelets.

Do you have front dropout eyelets as well? there are some cheap (black) small platform racks like that that mount to the dropouts, forget the make but I have a couple of variants on bikes. They can sometimes be bodged to use the rear dropout eyelets and share with your guards too...

What fork is it actually for?

Search for porteur rack. Plenty of options. Specialized pizza rack for example. Soma make a nice one too. Nitto have options with adjustable struts for your eyelets. Not in black.

Hmm yes - that Velo Orange one looks like it won't fit properly.
Here is a photo of the bike/fork (it's a Rose Cross bike)

I've seen the cheaper ones you mention, but I'm not sure if they fit at the bottom eyelets:

Yeah they're in the traditional low-rider location.

Porteur racks are an option but they're not 'small' as the entire point of them is carrying big stuff like stacks of newspapers or pizza boxes/beer crates.

I have a Spesh Pizza Rack fitted to one bike, it's good, and not that expensive, but it aint small!

Sounds ike what you want is something like a Compass UD1 or Nitto M18?

Or buy one of these and make you own stays?

Try Practical Cycles website - this type of rack are common on continental bikes and available quite cheaply.

Surly 8 pack.
Not cheap though.
I made/hacked my own from an old rack which was surplus to requirements. https://flic.kr/p/2dSexRJ
Only cheap if you already hve a spare rack lying around though.

M part do one, front rack. £20 from bike tart. I bought one, needed to bend it a little to fit, but it works.

You can fit rack & guards on the same eyelets.

It has rack eyelets half way down the fork

Carbon fork? If it's a similar fork to my Arkose, it has mudguard eyelets halfway down the fork. Don't think they are rated to take a load.

jameso, in the Arkose thread, some time ago:

The M5 mount on the blade is only for a guard, deliberately placed too low for a low rider as it’s not designed for it.

I have looked for just the same thing, and I too have only found poor compromises or very expensive options. I was resigned to making my own, but will check the links above first.

The Brick Lane one looks ok actually.

Not worried about the load capacity will only ever have a couple of kg on it max - hence looking for a small rack. You can specify the bike with a rack that mounts there too, though it's not sold separately

Have an ebike with a pizza rack style thing for heavy loads

I had a look for something like this a while ago and the affordable option seemed to be the Racktime Topit:

https://www.bike24.com/p216669.html

Bonus points there for the dynamo light mount.

You can fit rack & guards on the same eyelets.

You can, but depending on fork and brake you may need to space it out, which is fine for mudguards which don't load the bolt much, but personally I'd be cautious about doing it with a rack. It'll be fine on some forks, of course, but probably not all.

Doesnt the BLB one have a reputation for cracking? As do the Nitto ones if try to bend to fit?

I have a Spesh Pizza rack I really like. Also looked at this as another option: https://www.bike-components.de/en/Racktime/Top-it-Front-Rack-p21625/
