Hi,
I have a FS carbon mountain bike and would like to add a bash guard to the chain ring. I have always run MRP type bash guards previously but my frame has no attachment points.
I have seen the type that fit directly on the chain ring but not sure about the robustness and also if I can get one that fits on a SRAM X-Sync 2 chain ring. Can anybody provide me with some advice?
Thanks!

I'm of the opinion that chain/crank ones are more robust than frame mounted anyway. Your weight is in the feet - i.e. on the cranks. You are trying to protect the chainring and chain from damage.
Doing this directly (feet - crank - chainring) rather than transfering force from feet - cranks - BB - Frame - bashguard seems the better way especially on a carbon frame even if it did have mounting points.
Don't MRP do a BB mounted version if you have a threaded BB?
I wouldn't worry about the strength of chainring mounted guards, SRAM fit them to their latest T-Type, but I'm not aware of one for SRAM direct mount.
I don’t have a threaded BB and no space to fit a frame mounted one. Anybody know if you can get a bash guard on an x-sync chain ring. I’ve seen GX, XX and bolted but not X-Sync?
thanks
Bit more research, it is a 3 bolt system and there doesn't appear to be either a SRAM or aftermarket chain mounted bashguard! This is the only one I have found Narrow Wide MTB Chainring Boost 3mm 32T/34T/36T Bashguard Chainwheel For Sram | eBay UK but is the quality good?
The bash there looks to bolt to the chainring, so if you hit the bash then you risk bending your chainring. I would buy or look into the transmission cranks with the bashguard although I don't know how they mount either

The bash guard bits - it's two separate parts - bolt through from the rear of the chainring using a kind of shaped washer that fills gaps in the chainring (hard to describe) . Seem fairly robust to me, although I removed them before fitting these as I wanted to use an upper chain guide instead. One of the few reasonable priced cranksets in shorter lengths too...
