Just doing some maintenance on a bike for a friend and there is about 2mm of lateral play on both sides. Seems odd to have gone so badly on both sides. Looks like to me that it is missing a washer or top hat type thing. Anyone have any thoughts?

I reckon the only way to solve this is look up the owners'/workshop manual and find an exploded parts view and go from there or maybe get some dismantled pictures up on here so people can see what's there.

It’s very difficult for anyone to help without some pictures!

Sorry, that would have been helpful! I cannot find any relevant diagrams online. The pivot on both sides can be pushed about 2mm from side to side. Maybe normal but just seems odd. Hard to see from the photos. When lifting the bike by the top tube it feels like a shock busting it bearing has gone, however everything else is tight and seemingly play free.

To help, remove the rear wheel and shock and then it often becomes clear where the problem is. It may be that both bearings have failed/worn at the same time. I presume that you’ve checked the torque/tightness of the bolts?

If those bearings have worn, when you carry out the shockless “cycling” you may find others are worn. A bearing company like Kinetic Bike Bearings may be able to help with spacer position etc.

Sorry I can’t help more, difficult without the bike in front of me, good luck!

Thanks. I was just confused by both sides having so much lateral play. I wondered if it was some kind of floating design. Torque is correct

This could be just bearing play or a missing spacer but could also be the bearing loose in the frame which will be new chain stays. I think this is a wyhte thing as I've know of a couple do this.

Take it apart and see what's happening.
