those clever Chinese haven't solved the "steam up during a slow technical climb" problem at all 🙁 😉

otherwise they were great on their maiden voyage

Yep same here, especially bad at traffic lights on the commute in this weather. M/C helmet visor anti fog on the way. Or Oakley nano clear or whatever it's called. Just wince at the typical Oakley price.

It's not the clear vision thing for me with real Oakleys , it's the protection they offer and £10 Chinese ones will not offer that .

I doubt a large company like Oakley would make up a claim like that though, there are plenty of gun toting yanks who have probably tried it. ! Each to their own but I prefer the real thing .

I don't doubt that Oakley live up to their claims.

I just don't think you can say that the fakes do or don't. Threads on here suggeat that they do protect from UV. whether they stop shotgun pellets remains to be seen.

Could a fake pair from China do the same?

My friend the Opthamologist gets Oakley's at cost price. He is riding in DX Fauxleys.

Good enough for a man who knows is good enough for me.

Totally agree, that's why I wear them and ride a mountain bike round Llandegla. Other mountain bike trails are available. 😉

Just out of interest, how many people on here have actually survived a shotgun blast to the face because they were wearing genuine Oakleys? (just because you LOOK like you've been shot in the face does not count)...

BTW, every pair of riding specs I've ever owned, including Oakley, steam up on me. It's because I'm a fat git 😀

I think the point is that something hitting your eye very fast will be stopped by the lenses rather than suggesting you wear them into battle 🙂

I really like mine...don't steam up and super comfy. Yes I'd rather have the genuine article, but not at 180 quid.

The protective qualities (from flying objects) of them don't really bother me, given I don't usually wear glasses its better than nothing. I do have a few concerns about the UV aspect however, so for now I'm just using them with the yellow lenses when its overcast..might treat myself to some genuine lenses at some point so my eyes don't burn out...

If you've got an LED torch and a road sign you can do a really imprecise test- they throw a lot of UV, and the signs are UV reactive.

Still, mentioned this in another thread but UV opacity isn't really something you have to add to a polycarb lens, or so I'm told- rather it's something that you sometimes have to work quite hard to remove. I'd be surprised if they don't offer at least some protection

What are you questioning?
That it is a basic property of polycarbonate to block UV?

Are you suggesting that manufacturers list inherent properties of the materials they use in their products as if they were special features?

This chap, having clearly been shot in the face, would not have the all apparent anger issues if he too had purchased the aforementioned eyewear.

Polycarbonate does indeed absorb UV light as an inherent material property.

However, if the PC contains miniscule amounts of impuritites (trace parts per billion) the UV energy absorbed by plastic creates reactive free radicals.
These free radicals form hydroperoxides that break the double bonds of the PC backbone chain (photo-oxidation). This has the effect of both making the PC brittle and reducing its UV absorbing properties.
To prevent this a stabilizer is required which absorbs the excited groups and prevents the chemical reaction of the radicals.

Several types of additives used are in combinations and compounded into the original PC to produce a grade with long term UV protection and enhanced structural and optical properties.

I have no idea if either the snide Chinese copies or the genuine product have these modified PC lenses, but hey, it's only your eyesight your gambling with isn't it.......

Yes, it's a well known fact that everyone was blind beyond middle age because Oakley hadn't come allong to save them! Do you wear Oakleys 24/7, or is it just sunshine whilst riding the bike that causes blindness?

FWIW theyre £10 sunglasses, just like those you can buy in boots/superdrug/decathlon/sports direct etc and as a result probably wont kill you, but won't make oakley any richer either, just like any othe £10 sunglasses.

Got mine today. Very impressed with the quality. A mate of mine picked them up tried them on and thought they were the same as his original Jawbones - I'd already changed the lenses to the orange ones. He was shocked to hear they were £12!

Could a fake pair from China do the same?

The Chinese ones will rescue it and then sell it's kidneys.

Tinted glass that doesn't cut down uv rays causes pupil dilation allowing more uv into the eye than would be possible were you to simply squint.

Basically, no sunglasses are better for your eyes than cheap nasty ones as your natural squinting reflex protects them. There are documented cases of people damaging their eyesight by wearing cheap sunglasses in sunny climbs. May not be something to worry about in a forest in Scotland though. Maybe.

Apparently, the frames of my existing real Oakleys are made from, and I quote, "O MATTER". Be interesting to see how this magical O Matter compares to the chinese plastic of the ones I've just ordered.

High prices cannot guarantee sufficient
protection as no correlation between high
prices and increased UV protection has been
demonstrated. A 1995 study reported that
"Expensive brands and polarizing sunglasses
do not guarantee optimal UVA
protection." [14] The Australian Competition
and Consumer Commission has also reported
that "[c]onsumers cannot rely on price as an
indicator of quality".

I'm increasingly tempted! Got 2 sets of (real) Jawbone lenses doing very little since I got photochromic ones, could put them to use in a different colour frame!

Can anyone recomend some photocromatic riding glasses that:

a) arent copies of 15 year old Oakley designs
b) dont cost £250 like new oakley designs
c) aren't reliant on fitting genuine oakley lenses into fake frames (although I think this might be a good option actualy, how much are the lenses?)

TINAS, my wife is using a pair of Salice glasses, which seem pretty good for photocromatic riding glasses, they go from a light enhancing yellow to a dark brown. I think they were about £80. They were supplied with a set of clear lenses too, as they are a bit yellow for night riding. Tifosi glasses are worth a look at too, seem good quality for the money.

I have a pair of the Oakley black iridium photocromatic lenses and they are very good, clear enough for night riding, and darken pretty well for sunshine, although for a road ride on a sunny day I would probably go for a darker lense.

Order a pair in orange/white yesterday, after all tis only a tenner, so worth a go.....

....now is it too early to start a thread complaining that they are not here next day, in true STW style?

I feel left out.

Even though I have a damaged retina from a sports injury, I don't wear any sunglasses when riding, and only occasionally clear glasses.

Will I die?

Someone recommended visionarylenses (US ebay) on another thread on the same topic I believe.
they look decent for the price but I havent used them myself so cannot confirm!
back OT- got my white/black jawbones today after about 18 days-arguments about UV protection for the price they look fantastic, although one of the rubber leg boots does say livestrong on it- only one mind!!

I've got the pukka Livestrong ones and it only says it on one. Shouldn't say it on either on the black and white ones mind!

Althepal mine had that on the inside of 1 leg but Made in USA...check torx screws.... Check and jawbone logo check.

Got mine after about 3 weeks. Lenses look totally fine and inside the joints is fully colour matched and not just black plastic.

Only thing they don't have is a little serial number on inside of legs.

I'm gona get 3 more sets to make custom colour combos.

Hmm. Don't have mine in front but the black lowers are all black.
Logos, torx screws.. All present and correct!
Anyone else's smell a bit whiffy when you first got them??
I have to admit, I fancy an all black and all white pair so might need to try ordering another pair with the opposit combo colour!

think she claimed about them smelling a bit painty. but my eyes can't smell out. god knows why she had them under her nose!

wore them for 1st time last night at a race, they were awesome right up until i crossed the line at the finish, where the heat/slow down made them instantly fog.

i reckon they'd be pretty shite on MTB.

but then thats the jawbone design and nowt to do with dx...
