That a boutique frame welded together by a craftsman in Germany/USA/England is better than a mass produced frame welded together by a peasant in Taiwan.
favourate about another hobby of mine:"Rockclimbing, of course it's the getting back down that's most difficult!"
People who own 3 or 4 bikes; say their single speeded old mountain bike cobbled together with old bits and MX forks, along with their poverty-spec CX bike etc is far better and superior than someone who spends their money on one bike to do it all for them. 🙄
Then tell you how much better a rider they are than you because they only need "100mm and one gear". 🙄
Inverted snobbery.
Just as bad as the folk who spend thousands on numerous top end bikes.
Everyone on a MTB is friendly it's only roadies that are arses.
Must admit, why should you meet and greet everyone you come across on the road? What next, doff your cap to a fellow car driver? I quickly became tired of MX5 drivers doing this. ITS A MASSED PRODUCED CAR NOT AN EXCLUSIVE CLUB FFS! 😆

I was wondering that as I was riding along the seafront here in Swansea yesterday. Should I have greeted every student, loafer, commuter etc with a hearty hellooo, or just not bother?
I came to the conclusion that it's a bit like shopping - I don't wander around JS saying "Oh look, another shopper, HELLO!".
Rockclimbing, "of course it's the getting back down that's most difficult!"
probably a bastardisation from alpine style mountaineering where the truism "at the top you're only half way" was/is used, as a lot of deaths occur due to tired climbers trying to move quickly often unroped over "easy" but still very dangerous ground.
"the back end feels springy"
"feels stiff"
You cant ride down there on that bike.
I used to think all other Land Rover drivers were waving at me.
Then I realised they were just wiping the condensation of their screens because their heaters don't work either.
Edit;
MilitantGraham in Four other people reply in the time it takes me to type a single sentence making my reply look irrelevant shock
singlespeed is anything other than a willy-waving exercise for beardy losers. 🙂
Hold on, I just have to adjust my shock/fork pressures for this trail..
Ah, haven't got the right tyres for this bit..
99% of all statistics are made up.
I heard it was 78%..
60% of them are made up 100% of the time.
That you need to hang off the back of the bike when going downhill off road ..
If you ride on flats then you're not doing it properly ..
You can't ride SS on flat pedals ..
You need 6" of rear travel to ride the final descent of the ClimachX ... whoever said that was a proper nob 😉
You need a torque wrench for that.

you're pretty good! 😆
Presta valves are only for road bikes.
My skills are so good I have progressed onto flat pedals.
This bike is a keeper.
I suppose inb general its all the your under or over biked stuff
In the real world groups are often out on a range of hugely diffrent bikes and all get on fine on the same trail.
Case in point couple, one on 29er single speed the other a Specialized Enduro. Different bikes for different folks, all good fun
On here it too much you only need a hard tail or you'll need 6 inches both ends for that

No its not absurd, it's obviously accelerated UP and DOWN. Oh, and forwards AND backwards. And ad infinitum.....
that Hora is a nice bloke with no chip on his shoulder
The small rotors hypothesis is mine. I claim it. I just don't suggest you try it in the Alps. And dont' sue me if it turns out I'm wrong.
And the Orange Five is a re-hashed single pivot - regularly (though subtly) rehashed. Still good though.
Rotating weight makes a significant difference to your speed.
you must use bolt through forks if you ride more than canal tow paths .... copywrite dasnut ....
That mountain biking is difficult and scary (sure some of the time it is - but people seem to think that all mtb is hard)
The biggest load of Tosh heard in MTB'ing has gotta be Hora's usual quote of 'I'll be riding with you tomorrow!'
'you're not supposed to be riding that bicycle here you know'
Steve peat beat grum going down
😕 ?
Militantgraham, I'm not sure how many 'peasants' there actually are in Taiwan these days.
Anyway, howzabout the classic; "huff!.. I just.. huff!.. have to.. puff!, stop just.. huff puff!.. just up here.. wheeeze!.. just to.. huff.. adjust my suspension settings/seatpost/ rubbing disc " 😉
Titanium frames are for life...
"It's in stock" vies with "It'll arrive in 3 days" in my experience.
Also, MBR... "The rims are too narrow and weak and the brakes don't really work at all, 10 out of 10!"
anything involving 'JRA'
I can clean the black at Laggan but certainly don't find it easy. I generally pass people on it but am at the back of our group. Is Jaun and the rest of the riders on here really at a standard where they think it is easy? It's just I only know one person that does and he wins DH races and gets sponsored. I bow to the collective STW skill and hope one day to be able to ride with and learn from you l33t d3wds.
That 160 rotors don't give you enough stopping power,
You don't need a fancy carbon bike - On-One make all there bikes from steel and titanium . . . . . oh, hang on ....
The saddle will get comfier once it's been worn in.
Gluless patches don't work,
You need to replace your helmet every 3 years as the UV rays weaken it,
'No darling, that's the same bike I've always had. Ive just cleaned it'
Single speed is fun
flats, no spd's, no flats... and repeat.

Yes, that is tosh isn't it. Glad I visited the site.
The best way to learn to jump is to ask the experts who frequent internet chat rooms.
THat the early UK mountain biking sceme was XC raves over flat fiels on flat barred bikes. That came later
It started in the mountains with risers and big tyres.........
Well not everyone had risers but bars were wide and high
its the forks rebound that gets the front wheel up lol 🙂
Guy in the shop yesterday:
Can I have two 26 inch inner tubes please
Me:
Of course, would you like presta or schraeder valve?
Guy:
I'll go for the big-valved ones...my mate told me that the thin valve ones are made out of a rubber that lets air escape through it and you have to pump up your tyres before every ride
Me:
Yes that's true, it's a wonder we sell any of the thin valved ones in fact. That'll be £9.98 please 🙄
Is Jaun and the rest of the riders on here really at a standard where they think it is easy?
Well I am average less, but I still don't find the black at laggan hard or techy that's for sure.
Every difficult section is straight forward, have clear run in and clear run out...
You don't really have to think where you have to put your front wheel to make it...
You're mate (and you will probably clear it way faster than me).
- "You don't need 140mm to ride that trail" (said with scorn).
- People who look down on trail centre riders.
- People who actively feel they are better riders on others and this gives them some sort of false hierarchy.
- People who get to the bottom of a descent first and that makes them naturally a better rider than any others. You know, at times anyone could get down that descent on the edge and as fast as possible but not everyone is out to show off or prove something that doesnt need proving huh?
How I see it. No matter what you ride or how well you ride you are never a better cyclist (or person) than the next man or woman.
I've had laughs with people on cheap bikes and laughs with people on bikes three times the cost of my own bike. The bitter types who struggle through life remind me of the grown-ups who drove me away from road/club cycling as a kid.
**** that if I'm going to become like one of those types.
What matters is everyone enjoys themselves. Not 'oo look I manualled off a rock on my singlespeed so that makes me more of an authority than everyone else'.
Bit of a rant but sorry, you do come across people in cycling who take themselves too seriously.
🙄
Oh, the irony.
As for Hora's 'rehashed single pivot' comments. Heckler, anyone?
Aye, I also cast aspersion on the two new Santa Cruz models!
Hey. Being a Dad, I've realised I'm not bitter just carefree and odd in person 😀
That you need a FS bike to go down even the smallest descent... If you try it on an HT you WILL end up crippled...
"All Mountain Bike" What a stupid title. You can ride any bike all over a mountain.
People that go to the Lakes or Scotland only to ride trail centers.
People that write articles every month for well known mountain bike magazines that don't actually live anywhere near a mountain or hill for that matter.
"All Mountain Bike" What a stupid title. You can ride any bike all over a mountain.
+1
That "all mountain bike" thing is annoying. Could you really take a bike up/down *all* of any given mountain? Take Snowdon for example. Could you realistically ride along the Crib Goch ridge? I don't think so.
(Now someone is going to come along and say that's their regular XC loop they do on their rigid SS).
Admittedly Glentress is very good!
Reading stw is not a productive use of works time your usage is being monitored
Disliking road bikes like it is some alien thing ...granted we are slim and fast but dont let that put you lardy beer bellied types off but PPLLLLEEEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEE dont wear lycra.
People who think you need loads of travel to ride anything.
People who wear armour for things that just dont require it and seem to not realise that if you pedal you can actually propel the bike rather than walk it everywhere that is downhill.
People who ONLY ride trail centres sure they are fun but surely you want t see somewhere remote and proper countryside?

totally agree but trail centres are great training places. Its abit daunting riding off road and getting lost. Trail centres can wet the appetite and then people progress on to explore...?
Or just ride around a trail centre forever.
Mayhem / SITS / Bonty 24 .... any 24hr event will be fun (& dry) this year.
Thay're not fun, but it's great when you've finished them & slump into a dreamless stupor!
(made harder if you don't ride Ti of course!)
All Marin riders wear sandals and have beards.
No wait, they do.
SS = beards (surely).
SS = beards (surely).
Nope. SS = handlebar moustaches! This is 2010 you know..
You cant ride in the peak district without suspension.
"All Mountain Bike" What a stupid title. You can ride any bike all over a mountain.
People who get all upset about names for things.
Funny, there's a lot of stuff here I think is true.
Serious Q jedi, I can hop/wheelie to certain standard but if I switch to rigid forks, same bike, same geom how come I can't lift the front end half as well?
edit, you're going to tell me I'm doing it wrong aren't you? damn.
'People who ONLY ride trail centres sure they are fun but surely
you want t see somewhere remote and proper countryside?'
Disagree. I go hiking to properly see the countryside.
I'd rather ride something challenging with nice flowing jumps and berms.
People who misunderstand the term "all-mountain": It is a term to describe a style of riding that incorporates jumps, drop-offs, DHing, north shore obstacles etc, as well as riding to the top - all within the same ride, but is generally geared more towards the gravity aspect of riding bikes.
I don't usually like such categorisations, but I actually think it is quite a useful term to describe what a bike is designed to do.
It is, however, probably more appropriate to places like Canada where the trails are designed to incorporate the above features: Check out Kill me Thrill me or Daminal, just outside of Whistler, for the very definition of "all-mountain".
Serious Q jedi, I can hop/wheelie to certain standard but if I switch to rigid forks, same bike, same geom how come I can't lift the front end half as well?
Well I am not jedi clearly but I am the opposite I find it easier and higher with rigid/locked out and not clipped in as I learnt from BMX days. Perhaps because you are used to compressing first and I am not. If you push down on your front forks the rebound will not actually get the wheel in the air. perhaps I should bounce more with suspension? Awaits the input of riding god
People who ONLY ride trail centres sure they are fun but surely you want t see somewhere remote and proper countryside?
Actually I am much more interested in the riding than the scenery. That's not to say that I won't occasionally remember to look up and see the pretty views, but I'm not inclined to head out somewhere remote unless the trails are going to be fun. Generally I find that trail centres provide a lot of enjoyable singletrack and even at a trail centre there's the occasional break in the pine trees where a nice view can be seen. 🙂
The biggest load of tosh? Any opinion that's based on a personal preference but has been expanded so that it must apply to all. E.g.
"People who ride at trail centres aren't proper mountain bikers."
"All Shimano/SRAM/Fox/Rock Shox kit is terrible and should never be used."
"Singlespeeding is stupid and anyone who does it is stupid too."
Etc.
I love nature first. Riding close second. Just love being out there 😀
Don't have time to read all this, could someone do a three word summary for me?
Don't have time to read all this, could someone do a three word summary for me?
"Everyone speaks tosh"?
It's all good
if you buy anything and in the sentance describing it you mention the dirty word "halfords" you are an idiot who cant ride to save his life and has just been completely ripped off.
in short, drop mtbing and find another hobby, you are nothing but a clueless fool!
Trail naming
and yes i do have a boardman!
(closes curtains and hangs head in shame, as ive been told to do) 😀
I love those types who have obviously spent hours on cross-trainers, road bikes and practice in private - then try and show you up to prove they are a better rider than you. They can ride to the top of the climb and then look down on you.
Funnily the joy of mountain biking is about just getting out there and enjoying yourself.
trail naming + 1

Get a turbo trainer then 😉
Surely part of it is to get somehwere away from built up areas towns - see these pics and tell me you are not inspired?

Typical insecure types who claim something is easy, so that you then look inferior to them, and they can feel smug without appearing deliberately arrogant...

+1. I was and am. Amazing. Made me want to kick over my desk and set off.

Dude. You have surpassed yourself. This is truly superb tosh. Take a bow. 😀
Glad I put a smile on a few peoples faces - certainly made me smile. Keep it to yourself .... but we even rode the red trail at Whinlatter one afternoon after the morning on Helvellyn - Nice to actually ride up a hill rather than shoulder your bike
