Hi, just getting back into cycling, bought an Alfine 7 speed (as it was advertised) hub with wheel 2nd hand online. Seller didn't seem too clued up.

It is for chain drive, but had no sprocket, but a strange bevel type gear, see pic . Is this some sort of coupling for the sprocket?

alfine hub

There isn't an Alfine 7 speed, so probably an 8. Photo isn't working.

The sprocket mounts with 3 lobes. Google Alfine sprocket. Same as a lot of Sturmey Archer. Holds on with a circlip.

Thanks, thought 7 was the Nexus, so makes sense to be 8 cheers.

It doesn't seem to have the lobes, hopefully pic is working now. Couldn't see anything on Google, hence posting here.

OK photo now works ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks like an 8. And looks like it has been on some kind of shaft drive bike. There should be a wire circlip to allow removal of that oddball bevel gear...

Thanks, that's great. It looked like a bevel gear for a shaft drive, but never seen one in the wild so wasn't sure. Will investigate removal.

That's the internals you can see isn't it?

I bet it's from a city bikeshare fleet or cargo bike.

Get inspecting the exploded parts diagram as there are probably other parts and covers needed.

(But my first guess was also internals, can't remember what mine looks like under the cover but exploded diagram will help with that)

Nah the internals are behind the thin knurled/rigid bit between the worm drive and the flange

There's nothing that looks like that (at that diameter) inside an 8.

Thanks all, looking at the explored diagram on Bikeshed

Looks like the bevel gear is located on the "Driver Unit". Hopefully this can be removed and a normal sprocket attached. If not might have to replace this whole part. Cheers

I did an Alfine part strip and lube a month ago. The shift unit doesn't get touched during that - I'd imagine it is a nightmare if the drive input bit needs to be replaced.

Most likely is a circlip, or the bevel gear screws onto an adaptor held on by the regular circlip. Might be rather tricky holding everything still if the gear needs unscrewing.....

Your link above goes to Alfine 11 info which is a very different hub.

Seems like after chatting to some hub suppliers, this may not have been the bargain I thought it was! Doesn't look like it's a simple swap out of components as it's a custom hub. Might have to see If I can machine the bevel down in the workshop and make a custom sprocket mount. Cheers all for the help.

That looks like an Alfine 8. Remove the wheel from the bike. Do you know how to remove the shifter ring interface? It should pop off when the coloured dots are aligned correctly. Then there should be a thin plastic shield that should just pop off with a bit of gentle force. Behind this there will be a thin circular spring clip set into a groove. It is this that you need to lever out. Carefully, don't lose it and wear eye protection. The bevel gear should then slide off I think.

You might want to google "Sussex Shaft Drive".

Hi, just saw this now. Yes you are right, simply disassembled and popped off the clip. Looks to be the standard 3 lobe coupling, have a sprocket on order, to hopefully swap out.

gear

A lot easier than I was expecting, the parts supplier I got the sprocket from reckoned it would all be custom and couldn't be converted.

Thanks all
