Am getting thru an inordinate number of inner tubes.

Under braking my tyres (both) are slipping on the rims and eventually ripping the valves off. Any quick-fix or bodge you can recommend to cure this? Is it cos my tyres are a bit on the old side and the bead's gone a bit slack?

(and don't say "go tubeless"...)

Thanks in advance.

I used to get this with cheapy fire XC's - they were so slack they shifted on the rim.

I started using talcum powder on my tubes - stops them getting dragged by the rotating tyre so much. The only other option would be to glue one bead to the rim - I didn't like the sound of that.

These days I talc all my tubes, just makes life easier.

Talc! Couldn't remember if that made them slippy or sticky...

Thanks, ADH.

Try putting some talc in-between the tyre and tube. I also had the same problem and after asking on here this was suggested to me. Didn't try it though, went with the other suggestion of going getto tubeless and haven't looked back.
Edit: Dam to slow!

Nae problem. Don't go mad though, or the first time you mend a puncture you'll end up looking like the ghost of MTB'ing past ...

ghetto is great, but has its own issues.

In days of old - when I used to race motorbikes
We used to drill though the rim into the tyre bead and screw a self-tapper in

you could try that 🙂

I put 2 or 3 zip ties running round the rim and over the tyre between the tread. Worked fine til the tyres were almost dead.

But do take a small blade and spare zip ties for if you need to change a tube whilst out.

cheapy fire XC's

Interestingly, that's exactly the same tyre I had that problem with. I think the bead had got sufficiently worn and loose that it just didn't grip the rim very well.
Tried talc, stronger inner tubes, and eventually, new tyres (Bontys). The latter was the only actual solution in the end.
