Just have a look at an OS map and find the most boring fire roads.

That'll be your course.

boardingbob seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder regards 10UTB (not just in this thread but many of the same ilk)

900 folk cant be wrong - personally 3 years ago was the best course they have done but it was good last year - i guess he was going too slow to enjoy the great singletrack that it contains - ok there is a fair chunk of fire road but thats the only way the 1000 competitors could ride the event !

10 at kirroughtree is the best of the three though

Still swithering as to attempt it solo. Not looking to win it, but as im doing Keilder 100 im using events like 10 Under the Ben and the old Merida's as training.

Can anyone tell me what type of trail is involved? I had a bit of bother recently at Kirroughtree with pinch punctures when running conti speed king supersonics. I'm wondering if a more robust rear is required. I've also run the tyres at Ae with one puncture and at Drumlanrig with none. So is it more rocky or smooth?

its a good mix tbh .... couple of rocky sections - much less than kirroughtree - what there is is similar to kirroughtree in terms of actual rockyness - thinking the cackle and witches back. - presuming they use those sections . and the fast section down from the cattle market seems to catch folk out as its large pointy rocks at speed - always view folk there with flats

perhaps try tubeless ?

photos of board walk look good 😉

rain this year ?

How climby is it? I'm thinking of doing it on my entirely unsuitable singlespeed but in theory I could borrow something more sensible..

my first year i did it -2006 iirc i did it on single speed - if you ride for the full 10 hours non stop you will place well. perfectly suitable bike if you can do 10 hours on SS. Most of the climbs in previous years have been long gentle gradiants of gravel grind - for lovely flowy downhills .. lets the fit team riders overtake the weak/not caring/solos on the climbs and then hit the decents unhindered !

What about Kirroughtree on the singlespeed, does it have any nasty climbs? should I go 32:18?

aye kirro is the best of the three for SS imho ...

there is one piece i can think of that youd need to push (i pushed anyway) Dr jon came blazing past in a flight of fury - only to bury him self in the stem when his chain snapped :s

the rest of it flows nicely and SS limits you going too quick (as the course encourages you to tank it ) and ruining the flow

i rode 32:16 - to 7th place - take from that what you will,

even on 32:18 i dont see you getting up the double climb on anything but maybe the first lap

entered 10@kirroughtree. is it on the red trails? i have been there once and vaguely remember it being flatish with some fast flowing stretches and a few rocky bits. did 10utb 2008, i thought it was a good course, with lots of variety and very good event.

Last years course was good, yeas there was boring fire roads but also there was a few techy steep climbs and some nice single track, a few muddy bits too (even though it was 23c), the variety was fun... get pumped by the 'secret roadies' on their plastic hardtails on the fire roads, then let rip past on the single track, get pumped again on next climb... nice bit of jostling is good for the spirit. Now that I am a secret roadie riding a heavyweight santa cruz chameleon I expect to be at the back on all sections 😉

Iain, will be good to see a bigger GMBC presence this year, solidarity from brothers in arms... want to see some 'le tour' team tactics going on.

Lets hope the midges don't want to play.
