Fresh Goods Friday 748: The M.C. Escher Trail Centre Edition

by and 7

Don’t you just love the pointlessness of mountain biking? You start in one place, and usually finish in exactly the same place. Usually more tired, muddier and with less material on your brake pads and a desire to eat all of the snacks. I mean, what’s the point? You could just stay home and eat all the snacks instead…

Ahh, who am I kidding? We do it because… well, I’m not sure really. I bet everyone has completely unique reasons for riding mountain bikes, whether that’s combinations of fun, fitness, solitude – or company, altitude gain and loss… but mostly the justification for snacks, right?

Anyway, it’s time to see what crazy stuff the UPS van has delivered this week. (Or is it UPS that always reckons that no one’s in and takes it away again…?)

Singular Cycles Peregrine Mk3

This is the other blue gravel bike that I [Benji] mentioned the other day, to compare and contrast against the Kona Ouroboros CR. Arguably one of the pioneers of the whole what-became-gravel, Singular Cycles have been at this game since the mid noughties with the Peregrine. This is the latest incarnation: the Singular Peregriine Mk3. And can we all agree that it’s possibly the nicest looking bicycle of all time? Yes? Yes. Functionally speaking it takes everything good that road bikes willfully threw away over the decades and pairs it with good brakes and tyres. How much does it weigh? What is it like in a wind tunnel? Who GAF? It looks amazing and rides as sweetly as you imagine.

Prologo Dimension AGX Space Tirox saddle

AGX? Wha’? AGX stands for ‘Adventure, Gravel and Cyclocross’. The channel down the middle is called the PAS channel (Perineal Area System). THe saddle also has something called “Slide Control”; a silicone print on the cover that increases grip, “helping the rider to maintain a more stable position in the saddle during all phases of riding, even in the most extreme wet and muddy conditions.”

Prologo Scratch M5 PAS AGX Tirox saddle

Okay, so this Pogacar’s saddle of choice apparently. That’s fine. But what’s with the rear-facing blade on the rear? I assume it’s the result of some sort of vibration quelling/dissipating theory but… Ouch. The area between my belly button and genitals is wincing just looking at it.

The Man in the High Castle by Philip K Dick

I [Benji] am (re)reading the Four Books Of The Apocalypse, starting with this. Set in an alternative history where the Axis Forces won World War II. The other three dystopian classics? Brave New World, 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale. Oof. Happy happy joy joy.

STW Raffle Marzocchi Z1

Thanks to the lovely folks at Silverfish, we’ve got this Marzocchi Z1 to give away in a raffle. Oooh! Super handy for excellent trail riding experiences and home security services. If you’re new here you’re confused. Safe to say the Marzocchi Bombers have a place in the hearts of many STW readers. Here’s your chance to win some. More details to come soon. Start looking down the back of the sofa for raffle ticket money.

Transition Regulator

Yep, Transition have gone Bosch. The new Regulator comes with either a Bosch CX full-power motor (with 600Wh battery) or the Bosch SX mid-power motor (with 400Wh battery), and both can use the 250Wh range extender battery. Anyway, the bike is carbon fibre trail bike with 150mm rear travel paired to a 160mm travel fork. This bike in the pics was shot a Core Bike Show the other week and we’re doing our best to get hold of a test sample ASAP.

Stale Good Friday – 2015 Norco Range Carbon 7.1

We scrawled: “Up front a 160mm dual position Rockshox Pike takes care of business. There’s a nice short and wide Race Face cockpit and SRAM Guide RSCs take care of stopping duties. Wheels are a nice mix of DT Swiss 350 hubs matched to Stan’s Flow EX rims just waiting to be tubelessed up with Maxxis 3C Maxx Terra High Roller 2 tyres.

“A nice clean linkage hooks up the Cane Creek DB Inline Air shock to match the 160mm up front. There’s plenty of opportunity for tweaking suspension settings and it’s nice to see a field notebook and pencil included in the package.

“A SRAM XX1 1×11 drivetrain deals with the pedalling bit of the fun promised. An X1 cassette completes the picture. Nice to see a 30T ring up front, someone’s been thinking about the need for a bit of spinning range to get you up those long alpine climbs. As the bike is also intended as an off-the-peg enduro racer, the inclusion of an E13 chainguide will be appreciated for that extra security.

“It’s a well thought-out package, but it’s also available as a frameset if you’d prefer to build your own.”

Singletrackworld Podcast Episode the 7th

Benji & Hannah talk dirty to each other about British Cycling, i9 Wheels, Press Launch crashes and Hannah tells the longest (possibly also the worst) Whale joke in the world (post credits).
