Gareth wrote about his tentative steps from road rider to mountain biker. Three months later, how is he getting on? From Holcombe Hill A Cycle Scheme I am a fortunate soul; fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country with access to some amazing countryside and trails, fortunate to have mountain biking mates who know these trails and who have been willing to have a Newb’ tag along, and most fortunate to have…

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones.
More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments.
I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
Glad you have taken to it Gareth, it’s a lot of money if you didn’t!
Best subsequent money I ever spent was on a coaching session, I went with some mates to Jedi – others are available but he is very very good.
Remember Rule 1 and don’t take offence if you hear me muttering (on my olde worlde bike) on a climb “bloody e-bikers, always bloody smiling”!
Right, you’re off and in the swing of it. Now, if you can get out in the week, an hour before work or an evening ride you’ll get even more fun. Regular shorter rides rather than one big weekend session is better for fitness.
You’ll probably need advice on what lights to get. 👍
