Taking kids along for the ride may actually improve your experience. Words & Photography Tony Hutcheson For me, being a mountain bike dad has always been rather easy. You see, I’m not very good at stuff. I can’t wheelie, I’m not always searching for the new gnarly line and my jumping days (brief though they were) are well behind me. Amanda is our resident pedaller, who loves the climbs as much as the descents. No genre of biking is turned down, though she is happiest when at the top of a mountain with a wild descent ahead of her. If you ever want a chat about concussion recovery, dealing with a Womb of Doom or how best to fuel an endurance XC race, she's the one to email.
We all (mum, dad and two 11 year old boys) went to Lenzerheide last summer and it was an excellent holiday says all. In the UK its a mixed bag, being local to Swinley and the Surrey Hills is good but four of us doing uplift like BPW is ,mad money (£200 a day), not so good.
Cost is the big issue with growing boys (clothes and shoes), bikes I buy used and ex demo and mostly see my money back.
My kid started on a Halford Action Man bike, then coming out with me towing him on a trailerbike, bigger and better mtbs as the years went by… times spent riding with him have been the best days of my life.
He’s way too skilled and fit for me now though, but I couldn’t be happier that he’s still into MTBing in his 20s.
