Magic Mary tyre

The Magic Mary is Schwalbe’s new top end gravity tyre, replacing the Muddy Mary, which has already proved itself on the downhill circuit with multiple world cup wins under 2013’s overall winner, Steve Smith.

You may be thinking then that this is a downhill specific tyre, but Schwalbe still offers the Magic Mary in all three wheel sizes, so it’s perfect for any discipline (as long as there’s mud involved). With multiple different carcass options and compounds available from Schwalbe, you really get to pick a tyre to suit your style of riding, but what you’ll always get is the awesome grip the Magic Mary’s tread pattern offers. For the past six weeks the Super Gravity ‘VertStar’ (Schwalbe’s name for its soft rubber compound) version of the Magic Mary has been aboard my Trek Slash 27.5in enduro machine, with the bad weather supplying the perfect test facility for the mud-hungry tyre.

After my first ride with the Magic Mary I was one happy rider; after weeks of holding back I could finally release the bike’s front end and really let it slip on muddy trails. From deep mud bogs to loamy corners, the large tread blocks were holding up perfectly, offering really good grip in and out of corners, and also in a straight line. I’ve found this tyre offers insane grip on all surfaces, however fast I’m going. The one downside I’ve found is that, after only six weeks of testing, there are already definite signs of wear on most of the outer edge tread blocks.

Overall: A really good tyre and well worth the money. In my view the Magic Mary is the new benchmark for all other tyre manufacturers and Schwalbe has really set the bar high.
