Arg - of all life's purchasing pleasures, washing machines aren't one of them.
But... I still don't want to get a duffer that wastes coal and breaks down every cycle, so what and where would you recommend?

We've got one of these: John Lewis 1203
Does everything we need, includes delayed start, 30/40/60deg programmes, quick washes (fastest is 30mins) and - one of the best features - a countdown timer indicating how many minutes before the current programme finishes.
Only had it 12 months, so can't comment on longevity, but John Lewis are always a reasonable bunch to deal with.
No doubt someone will come along in a minute to recommend you 'stretch' your budget to £800 to buy an AEG or Miele...
Comet have an auction site for stuff that has been opened, returned, demo machines etc. Go there and find a Bosch of something.
