I must say I was ammused by his account and stance , "I was in hospital with my young gay lover I spoke to the Dr and asked to be alone then smothered him .But I'm not going to give his name" for fxxks sake how many of his younger friends have died in those circumstances (smothered in hospital) it should'nt be too hard for a properly equiped police force to work out the identity.
He did not appear to be arguing for assisted suicide last night on the news and in fact specificaly denied that he was. He came out with the story in a general piece about death when he met a woman coming to terms with her partners agony and her desire to "help him". He came across as quite genuine and deeply touched by what he had done in a time of poor paliative care. He did not come across as a Drama queen.
To be honest I can understand his actions and if his account is true I hope that despite all the media attention the whole thing goes away with out a prosection.

SIMON .There is not really even sufficient evidence to charge right now , unsolicited confession with no details not even that the incident was in this country. Most importantly no evidence of cause of death he can say he smothered him but whats to say that actually killed him . A terminal aids patient could go at any time from any number of causes.
If he did do as he said and there is a conviction it would be for murder, there would be no sentence discression other than length.Life with a tariff starting point for calculation circa 15 years.that is why i hope it all goes away as either insufficient evidence or not in the public interest to prosecute. Though it would be very brave to decline on the public interest ground given the media activity.

Once again the media , I suppose , have taken a hot topic and , well , 'sexed it up ' . I bet they couldnt believe it . We've had average normal middle class , middle England , middle management middle sized man , who shops at Waitrose , getting bounced for doing his middle class wife a favour ,who was suffering from , I dunno , terminal hayfever , or something. OK , it was Parkinsons . I think .
Along comes a celebrity , of sorts , whos batting for the other team , confessing quite openly to a mercy killing of his AIDS infected former lover. They must've thought it was Christmas again .I wasnt being flippant when I mentioned my dad . It's a deeply personal thing , isnt it ? On the one hand we all want our loved ones to live forever , but my dad in the last 15 or so years of his life had had , and beat , cancer, a few times ( sarcoma + prostate ),had an amputation ( from ultimately the Sarcoma , his leg BTW ) , and then slowly began to lose his marbles .
He was a very clever man , and a musician , and construction worker , and a bit of a mad professor . The last 5 yrs were pretty tough , for us all TBH . Including him , but not only . My mums hips both had to be replaced , I'm convinced as a result of pushing his 13 st around in that bloody chair .
But even that wasnt so bad .
The last 2 yrs were the worst . I dont need to paint the bleakest of pictures , do I , but suffice to say it was pretty shit .
The thing is though , it wasnt even as bad as it could have got . A few days before he died we were having a bit of a joke in one of his more lucid moments . It wasnt too bad . He knew me at least.
A guy at work goes to visit his mother in law twice a week . Shes been in a home for over a decade , and cant even recognise them . Vegetative . Doubley incontinent .
How shit's that ?My dad was 82 . It was about 2 yrs too much . I can only hope that something comes along , some wonderdrug , that enables our brains to keep up with all the plastic and epoxy theyre using to keep us ticking over and existing .
Apparently our generation will live to 100.
Where's the fun in that.
So whether it's Aids that gets me , or parkinsons , or Dementia , or even bloody hay fever , I hope someone that loves me is there with a pillow .Just leave it 'til after I'm struggling with that tricky corner up to the Pike.

I agree with all your sentiments whole-heartedly - we're a society that thinks it's inhumane to prolong the suffering of our pets when a lethal injection will end the pain instantly, but we can't administer the ultimate act of kindness to our loved ones without risking criminal prosecution.
My beef isn't with the concept of assisted suicide, or euthenasia. The issue I have is with a pillock like Gosling thrusting himself forward as the public face of this cause without having what it takes to do the job properly.
I fear he'll do the cause far more harm than good.

As a number of people have commented, Ray Gosling has not been in the public eye much of late. However, those of us who remember the 70s and late 60s remember an excellent journalist and award winning documentary film maker, possibly one of the best around at that time. See wikipedia entry.
He had a lean period in the 90s but a series of documentaries about his life led to him being back on regional television.
He has always had a quirky view of life and has a history of activism in various causes, including in recent years gay rights, although the work I remember him for had nothing whatsoever to do with that. In all honesty, his delivery and use of language doesn't seem to have changed much from what I remember. Didn't see the program and don't have the full context, although from what I have heard second hand his "confession" was part of a piece looking at the difficulty and feeling of hopelessness of seeing a loved one suffer a slow and painful death.
This wasn't a live show as far as I am aware and therefore he and the producers etc. had time to think about this. I suspect that he is well aware that without more information from him the Police will get nowhere and I have read media speculation that the event described may have been changed in the telling to make pinning it down impossible. For some reason the phrase - crazy like a fox - comes to mind.

I agree that his 'performance' on the "Inside Out" show was obviously stage managed, carefully directed and no doubt done within guidelines advised by BBC lawyers.
But his interview with Sian n Bill left him looking bewildered, incoherant and completely out of his depth. He came across as being so wrapped up in maintaining his outward display of grief and desperation, that he failed to make a persuasive argument in favour of what he did. He looked disingenuous, like a bad actor.
Maybe the story is true. Maybe he did make make the pact of which he spoke. Maybe it was his lover's wish to die at his hands, in bed, whilst biting a pillow. Who knows. All I know is that thousands of genuine people who are faced with this heartbreakingly difficult decision must have cringed when he decided to appoint himself as poster boy for their campaign.

Hmmm ... pre-coming out presumably they were hoping not to be spotted as gay, so did not behave "camply"? So their behaviour is quite logical.
