non offensive bland middle class comedy - it is allright but not hillarious and people will not be talking about it in 40 years ie Fawlty Towers, Blackadder , Dads army even - I heard the Radio 4 comment as well about how all comedy was middle class- My Family was the other example and there was nothing working class like Only fools and Horses or Steptoe or bread.

No Mick, 1000% agree with you... Try as I might, I can't see anything funny in her "humour" at all...
I don't get it..

Case in point for the prosecution, Hyperdrive. Did anyone catch that?
Miranda Hart, Kevin Eldon, Nick Frost... and set in space to boot, it should've been bottled lightning and it was diabolically bad.

Personally I think she is funny and deserved the awards.
Her use of physical comedy is very orignal for a female comedian

I quite enjoyed hyperdrive.

There is a real snobbery with comedy, there was an interesting article on R4 this morning...
See, you could be a comedy writer with lines like that!

Her programme is a bit too look-at-me-aren't-I-clever, and makes me cringe. That said, I've only watched/suffered (delete as applicable) around ten minutes.
It's aimed at the same audience that BBC thought wanted to watch Emma Thompson's one-series-only "Thompson", which was a bizarre mix of 'comedy' and, appallingly, an 'interpretive dance' section somewhere in the middle of each programme. I remember it from my school days in the same way that I remember getting beaten up / dumped. Not with fond pleasure. It wasn't funny and, unsurprisingly, has never been repeated nor offered for sale on DVD.

I remember "Thompson". It was pretty dire.

I see it as more look-at-me-aren't-I-large-and-clumsy. And I laugh.

I have nothing to share save my own prejudice . I thought Hyper-drive was fab and think Miranda is good telly .Miranda does set out to be a modern show that all the family can enjoy together so wont be that edgy or alternative.
There are some very funny female comedians Linda Smith being a tragically late example.

She is funnier than Lee Mack.
But we have to remember that comedy that gets on to TV isn't about quality, it is about paying your dues and after x number of years you'll get a meeting with the BBC comedy department. If you've got enough friends who are further up the ladder and/or you just won't go away you'll get a series.

Miranda just isn't funny. Sarah Millican is better.

It took me a while to appreciate Miranda the series which did have some properly laugh out loud scenarios in the last series. I quite liked Hyperdrive - it wasn't something to write home about, but it had some good moments.
One of the things that she has seemed to be careful about is not to appear, suddenly get 3 TV shows and run out of material within 6 months - unlike McGyver (or whatever the smug squeaky bloke is called who won an award last week), or the profane scotsman with the leer, or Stephen K Amos' BBC series which seemed to run out of ideas about 10 minutes into the first show...
Actually there's a good quote from an interview last April in the Graun with Gina Yashere where she says:Distance hasn't mellowed Yashere's anger. "Television is run by white middle-class people, and they want TV shows made by people like them," she says.

Such fun.

I find Sarah Millican funny. Just thought i'd share.

It's only comedy mate.
Don't take it so seriously

Any lack of TV coverage for Gina Yashere has nothing to do with her being brown and everything to do with being about as funny as a case of genital warts, IMHO.

Innit though? Chill out, dude!"Television is run by white middle-class people, and they want TV shows made by people like them,"
Pretty much true. Someone mentioned 'Only Fools and Horses' as an example of 'working class' comedy. It's a Middle Class version of 'working class life', in the same way EastEnders is. OFAH is bloody well-written and performed, though.
I like Miranda. I thought the series was quite funny, and very inoffensive. Comedy isn't just about shocking people's sensibilities, and Miranda pokes fun at Middle Class attitudes without getting nasty. I saw several people I know reflected in the characters in the show.
I like The Royle Family for similar reasons, as it's an irreverent and humorous portrayal of Working Class attitudes and lifestyles. Again, it's well written and performed. Ricky Tomlinson certainly isn't Middle Class, so if he can take the pee out of himself, then I don't see why Miranda shouldn't.
My Family, on the other hand, is just poop. What a waste of resources that show is. Mildly amusing for about 5 minutes of the first series, but how on Earth it has run for so long is beyond me.

As funny as piles - +1
but then I hate James Corden, Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand etc etc. Obviously someone likes this kind of crap but not for me.

Funnily enough, The Mrs and I were having a similar debate about her only the other day. She'll flick through the EPG and choose to watch it, whereas I'll flick through to avoid it.
She (Miranda, not the Mrs) is just odd IMHO. That isn't the same thing as funny.

OMG, Dazzlingboy, can I come around to your place to watch telly please?
That roll-call of cack are all top of my avoid list too!
I was beginning to think I'd lost my sense of humour. Nice to know its not just me.Posted 1 year ago # -
Can't understand it myself. I thought as an extra as the ditzy cleaner in not going out she had found her level. And to be fair I was also surprised that she made quite a decent compare on "Have I Got News..". Certainly not award material.
But then I am getting more and more of the opinion that the awards season is just on the whole a bunch of narcissists slapping each other on the back and reinforcing their fragile egos.
So why worry?

Middle class, working class, To the Manor Born, wgaf? If you find it funny, it's funny, if you don't, it ain't!

It consistently gets 4-5m viewers - similar to the news and more than Match of the Day and QI.

That's because it's usually on after EastEnders or something, when people are having their suppers, or have dozed off, and otherwise simply can't be bothered switching channels.
Billions of people watch Celebrities Dancing on Come. Doesn't mean it's any good. Same with the Sun newspaper, McDonalds, etc etc etc. Popularity is no indicator of quality. People just like stuff that they don't have to make a lot of mental effort for. Passive absorption of junk food for the mind.

I find her strangely attractive.
I'm glad someone else said it first, but yes, I can see that too.
Posted 1 year ago # -
You asked why it had run for so long, the answer is good viewing figures.
Posted 1 year ago # -
I find she has some proper LOL moments. I agree with elfin on this one, but I do think she is a one trick pony as Ricky Grevais is, she will soon run out of steam, one more series and that's it

In the case of comedy I reckon it is.
The Sun is the most popular newspaper on Britain, but even most of its readers would probably agree that it isn't the best news provider available.
However since the only purpose of comedians is to make people laugh, then making more people laugh than anyone else probably indicates quality.
Miranda Hart must be doing something right - she's got a two page thread on STW dedicated to her.

Also thought hyperdrive was pretty good, and she was by far the funniest thing in it. Therefore watched her sitcom with high expectations and it was like a Terry & June flashback. My conclusion - a talented performer, but maybe not writer. Still makes her more talented than me, though. I can't even do a decent trackstand.

I didn't think your average Sun reader could read ,just look at the page 3 girls and pictures of footballers.

Nope, not just you. I just don't get what's funny about it. Unless it's on some level where everyone's laughing at the fact that it's not funny. The friggin Grauniad website has a column every week about how HILARIOUS it is, and I feel compelled every time to ask what it is precisely that's funny about it. They never reply.

Not sure stw thread length should be a litmus test of anything tbh.Posted 1 year ago # -

Well it shows how ignorant you are then, doesn't it ?
