A P McCoy’s gonna walk it according to the bookies. Followed by anyone else who isn’t a cyclist. Cav is at the bottom of the list. Shame IMHO as he’s the best in his field, like Amy Williams. Just not mainstream enough for the armchair sports fans 🙁

Apparently, it is Eno’s “An Ascent”

not going to help win the prize but Cav had a very eventful tour. After the Renshaw incident people wrote him off as a man who can only sprint with a good lead out train. Stage 18 he proved he could do it alone.

On the final stage in Paris (about 6min 30) he passed the other two like they were standing still.

Phenomenal at what he does but he wont get SPOTY because you have to be quite into cycling to appreciate what he does and follow the stories.

    2 world championships (Track, Madison)

Maybe he should have stuck with track then. At least he won some races doing it.

The horse should have won it…..oh well, the public have spoken. Im sure the next horse rider i see on my favorite piece of singltrack will have a sly little grin on there face… haha

Every stage of the tour is an individual race. I believe he’s won a few of those.

They’re stages of a single race. Hence the word “stage”.

Just how hard is it to ride a horse bike really fast? How much is down to the horse bike and how much is down to the rider?

He is a very successful jockey and a sportsman who has excelled in his chosen field. Maybe not my choice, but probably a worthy winner nonetheless.

Besides, Cav hasn’t given up on track anyway, he’s going to be competing in 2012 I thought.

Coyote, you have to pedal to make a bike move. The horse does all the work (I’d assume), where the bike does nothing.

Sorry… should have said every stage of the tour ‘is like’ an individual race. I’ll go and do something more interesting now 😀

Realman. You are obviously speaking from a position of ignorance. Go try horse racing; flat, jumps and steeplechase, and then feel free to comment on the skill and fitness involved.

The horse does all the work (I’d assume), where the bike does nothing.

Two riders of equal ability, one on a £100 supermarket special the other on a quality 6-8″ full suspension bike. Who get’s down Freight Train first?

Total chaos would reign since none of the jockeys would know how to drive the horse they’re on.

To get away from the philosophical debate that typically pervades on any STW thread…

The look on Cav’s face after the decision….beaten by a beer swilling arrows thrower and a jockey. Can’t say he’d be happy with that one!

what was that music from as Michael Johnson just walked down the stairs?

Brian Eno. Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks.
    Track 5, An Ending (Ascent)

Yes it was used on Top Gear on the Aston Section when JC got all emotional.

Sadly this is probably the view of the general public. Have a quick look at this link and the subsiquent second part: here That should at least give an impression of the kind of achievement winning a large race like Milan-San Remo is.

In his own little niche specialism of a niche sport he’s very good.

A niche sport which has the largest annual sporting event. A niche specialism which resulted in him standing on the podium at that event more than all but one or two other riders.

This is a really lovely piece of music. Also they used John Murphy’s ‘In the house, in a heartbeat’ from 28 days later (my lad loves this and has plays an arrangement of it on piano and another on guitar – he is very talented but ahem, this is an aside from my barbed critique).

It’s cringingly awful watching the BBC attempt to pull off a grand production where each section is given the Hollywood trailer treatment. It’s always going to fall down when sports people speak but it really isn’t their fault. I’d be terrified of being interviewed on live TV.

I suspect this is deliberate. You know lots of people on here don’t like Cav, or at least don’t like the fact that lots of people do like him.

He’ll be the greatest sprinter on the planet, ever, shortly (based on lifetime sprint wins), and you’ll still see people posting stuff like that. Cav may not ever be the sports personality of the year but he already is one the world greatest sportsmen.

I publicly call MaCa a gobby scouser, but I quite like him – even if he’s had to rip up the personal stuff in his autobiography due to later emerging events.

    Utter balls

If cycling on a road was the only sport on the planet you could be right. But it’s not.

People mock the darts players, jockeys etc as there is a perceived lack of athleticism involved in these ‘sports’. As pointed out above, there is a huge amount of skill required – not something a road cyclist requires. Cav may be a great athlete, but he’s far from a sportsman.

Philippe Gilbert won the belgium sports personality of the year for the second year running this year, says a lot about two different countries attitudes to cycling.

So when cav is sprinting in a bunch of twenty people at 45mph, all of them fighting for space that isn’t there he’s not using any skill? When his team get him to the front time after time it’s luck is it?

The ignorance about road cycling on this forum is amazing
