Great, great bike rider but he's not going to win SPOTY is he...

He's the best in the world at what he does on a bike. I wouldn't trade an ounce of that for being a wee bit better at public speaking. Dont think he would either.

It's like they said on the commentary - he'd be a shoe-in if we were in france, italy, germany, wherever - really anywhere other than the UK for supporting a cyclist. Amy Williams has got some bottle though hasn't she? To be honest, they're all pretty worthy nominees.

Amy Williams on the other hand seems very comfortable, apparently she is also "physically" fit.

Which is?
Has he won a lot of stuff then?
I've tried to look but don't know what to compare it to.

I don't know if he's won a lot of stuff compared to his contemporaries (I've looked at his wiki page). Is he good in that he wins lots of races or is he good for a brit?

In his own little niche specialism of a niche sport he's very good.

Road racing isn't considered a niche sport in many countries though. I think Hoy was onto to something with his comments. I suspect more people have heard of Cavendish in France than in the UK.

Anyway, darts? Sport?

It's the BRITISH Broadcasting Service SPOTY though...

The players may not be very fit, but you can't deny the skill involved.

Darts is not sport, it's a game. No way should he win a Sports Personality thing.

Cav is the best sprinter in the world but that is not going to be enough for the cycling ignorant british public

Didn't Cavendish do something similar last time he was on SPOTY, ie little charisma? I missed it but hoped he would have learnt

Cav is very good at what he does .If he really needed public speaking it would be in his training plan.
No worse than watching Beckham trying to string some words together for the world cup bid .Why are people surprised when sports people can't do it all, they just happen to have a talent for (usually)one thing?

I never expect much more.

Fair enough. I don't really understand the premise of SPOTY. Is it about sporting achievements or personality?
Or is it just an excuse for a lash up with the luvvies?

Not going to happen. Le Tour has mountain stages. He will probably win the Green Jersey though.

He still can't match the outstanding public speaking of early Andy Murray. "So Andy, how do you feel?" "GUHHHHHHalright" "And you're facing Nadal in the next round, how is that going to go?" "DURRRRRRRRRalright"

In the public speaking stakes, MC is still considerably higher than most wendyballers.
He's one of the best road sprinters in the world but to most cycling-ignorant brits, he hasn't won a green/rainbow/yellow jersey so he won't win overall.

Who's the bookies fave? Think Taylor, Williams or McCoy. I'd like to see Williams get it really, proper athlete, won't get any more recognition for another 4 years.

Can't argue with that. On a "personality" basis, Phil would be a worthy winner. He has achieved more in his "sport" than the others, and is probably amongst the better known there.

33-1 for westwood, might be worth 50p!

200-1 for cav.

I've tried to look but don't know what to compare it to.

Gained from a quick wiki. He has won the occasional race like 2 world championships (Track, Madison), 15 stages of the Tour de France, 5 stages of the Giro and a team time trial, Milan-San Remo (which I think is the longest single day race might have made that up though), and Grote Scheldeprijs twice. Other than that not too much...

Billybob, they've used it a couple of times on Top Gear (behind the Aston V12 Vantage section for instance) but I've no idea what it is.

Anyone know?

A P McCoy's gonna walk it according to the bookies. Followed by anyone else who isn't a cyclist. Cav is at the bottom of the list. Shame IMHO as he's the best in his field, like Amy Williams. Just not mainstream enough for the armchair sports fans 🙁
