Mark Cavendish worst public speaker ever, probably
Hey - you can type faster than he can speak! 🙂
Great, great bike rider but he's not going to win SPOTY is he...
He might if you two get voting for him 😀
He's the best in the world at what he does on a bike. I wouldn't trade an ounce of that for being a wee bit better at public speaking. Dont think he would either.
It's like they said on the commentary - he'd be a shoe-in if we were in france, italy, germany, wherever - really anywhere other than the UK for supporting a cyclist. Amy Williams has got some bottle though hasn't she? To be honest, they're all pretty worthy nominees.
Amy Williams on the other hand seems very comfortable, apparently she is also "physically" fit.

Which is?
Has he won a lot of stuff then?
I've tried to look but don't know what to compare it to.
He makes Ryan Giggs sound charismatic
backhander - you've lost me.

A sprinter.
I don't know if he's won a lot of stuff compared to his contemporaries (I've looked at his wiki page). Is he good in that he wins lots of races or is he good for a brit?
In his own little niche specialism of a niche sport he's very good.
Good job he's handy on the bike then!
Call 09015 22 23 01 then we can give him practise if he wins! It's all cycling at the end if the day whether he's a roadie, track, bmx or whatever!
Needs to win le tour, then he'll win it.

Road racing isn't considered a niche sport in many countries though. I think Hoy was onto to something with his comments. I suspect more people have heard of Cavendish in France than in the UK.
Anyway, darts? Sport?
Just looking at the reception Phil Taylor just got, hes going to win isn't he?
I cant even get through to vote for him...backhander- hes a great sportsman for the uk,, you only needed to see this years tour de france to see that.. hes got heart and determinarion. A great brit flying the flag in the toughest race in existence

It's the BRITISH Broadcasting Service SPOTY though...

The players may not be very fit, but you can't deny the skill involved.

Best joke ive heard for ages, cant even win the green jersey !
Darts is not sport, it's a game. No way should he win a Sports Personality thing.
Cav is the best sprinter in the world but that is not going to be enough for the cycling ignorant british public
Football and rugby are both games too though.
Didn't Cavendish do something similar last time he was on SPOTY, ie little charisma? I missed it but hoped he would have learnt
Cav is very good at what he does .If he really needed public speaking it would be in his training plan.
No worse than watching Beckham trying to string some words together for the world cup bid .Why are people surprised when sports people can't do it all, they just happen to have a talent for (usually)one thing?
I never expect much more.
oops

Fair enough. I don't really understand the premise of SPOTY. Is it about sporting achievements or personality?
Or is it just an excuse for a lash up with the luvvies?
Phil Taylor being referred to as an athlete?
Needs to win le tour, then he'll win it.
Not going to happen. Le Tour has mountain stages. He will probably win the Green Jersey though.
He still can't match the outstanding public speaking of early Andy Murray. "So Andy, how do you feel?" "GUHHHHHHalright" "And you're facing Nadal in the next round, how is that going to go?" "DURRRRRRRRRalright"
In the public speaking stakes, MC is still considerably higher than most wendyballers.
He's one of the best road sprinters in the world but to most cycling-ignorant brits, he hasn't won a green/rainbow/yellow jersey so he won't win overall.
Who's the bookies fave? Think Taylor, Williams or McCoy. I'd like to see Williams get it really, proper athlete, won't get any more recognition for another 4 years.
The voting thing is crap. Cant get through to vote for Cav.
Cant get through? All you have to do is call this number 09015 22 23 01
When is it anounced who has won.

Can't argue with that. On a "personality" basis, Phil would be a worthy winner. He has achieved more in his "sport" than the others, and is probably amongst the better known there.
Yes - cant get through - goes dial dial dial cut off.
Can't get through eh, perhaps thats a good sign.
Anyhow, was that his missus they kept panning to when he was on stage?
33-1 for westwood, might be worth 50p!
200-1 for cav.

Gained from a quick wiki. He has won the occasional race like 2 world championships (Track, Madison), 15 stages of the Tour de France, 5 stages of the Giro and a team time trial, Milan-San Remo (which I think is the longest single day race might have made that up though), and Grote Scheldeprijs twice. Other than that not too much...
Iain
what was that music from as Michael Johnson just walked down the stairs?
Billybob, they've used it a couple of times on Top Gear (behind the Aston V12 Vantage section for instance) but I've no idea what it is.
Anyone know?
I recognise it from a film - but at the moment can't place it.
whoops double post...
A P McCoy's gonna walk it according to the bookies. Followed by anyone else who isn't a cyclist. Cav is at the bottom of the list. Shame IMHO as he's the best in his field, like Amy Williams. Just not mainstream enough for the armchair sports fans 🙁
Apparently, it is Eno's "An Ascent"
Info garnered from twitter but not checked yet
Anyone else notice a resemblance between posh spice & helena bonham carter in planet of the apes?
