So if a farmer wants to know how many cows or pigs or horses he has he just counts them.
How does he know how many sheep he has? At what point does he nod-off and have to start again and can he get further the next time before it sends him to sleep?

Strap the piece of toast to a sheep instead and it would be perpetual mutton.
Anyway - as any fule kno, counting sheep is easy. Just count the legs and divide by 4.

I often drive past a firm that claims to be one of the world leading companies in animal identification systems.
I always imagine they sell flow diagrams 'does it have fur?' 'would I see it on a farm?' 'can it swim?' - 'it's an otter', but apparently they sell ear tags.

The farmer whose field adjoins our house counts his just after being fed so they are busy eating and not jumping over fences*
*I have never seen a sheep actually jump over a fence.

You just need one of those counting dogs.
I had one, had to get rid of it though. Sent it out one morning to round up the sheep, seemed to be doing a good job until I decided to check.
"How many sheep are in that pen?" I asked him.
"50" came the reply.I checked my paperwork from the morning- wrong. Dang.
Tried again:
"How many sheep did you say are in that pen?"
"Ummm...50?"
"How come I only counted 48 this morning".
"Well, you did tell me to round them up" he says.Like I say, had to go.

Being a contract sheperd and having some ourselves we just count them at shearing and feeding

*AFAIK, no one has ever seen the sheep roll over a cattle grid.... However, I do see them jumping walls - 'onto and off' as opposed to straight over...
