Arsenal's first big challenge comes only this week, with a CL qualifier against Udinese. They better hope Udinese aren't that good, cos the way they played yesterday, they stand a good chance of not even getting into the CL proper. With no escape route into the Europa League, I think. So, pressure on even this early, without looking like a team who can actually handle it.
As for Liverpool; great first half, but unlucky with the penalty, disallowed (perfectly good really) goal, and Downing's screamer off the bar. Cooduv easily bin out of sight by half time really. And only one serious error for their goal. Shooduv killed the game off first half really. Frustrating, but not the end of the World. Plenty of positives.
But Sawyer, as an Arsenal fayn, tell me honestly; what do you realistically expect from this season?

not read the whole thread, but what intigued me about the whole thing was why was Barton given a card at all ?
i know that he should have got red not yellow, but - and this is the important bit - tv clearly showed that the ref and lino definately did not see barton man handle the arsenal guy, the ref had his back to the whole thing. it was revealed afterwards that the radio communication between officials was out and the ref and two linos didn't confer until after the cards had been issued. so why and for what was barton given a yellow other than for taking part in the general melee, in which case more cards should have been issued?
on what the ref saw barton shouldn't have received anything. poor refereeing, handing out cards on what he thought might have happened.

as a staunch defender of Barton on this thread in the past, I have to agree he didn't exactly cover himself in glory yesterday, he say he doesn't like cheats after blatantly cheating himself is a bit shameful. However I echo elfins comments, he wasn't the one that stamped on a player, or the one who blatantly dived to win a penalty, or the one that slapped another player in the face, but all the focus is on him. although, after his antics over the lat few weeks he only has himself to blame for that.

Barton is no angel, but at least he's honest
Errrr, trying to convince the ref that he'd been punched when the Arse player had girlie slapped him ain't that honest IMO. Ditto for Barton's teamate who upper the ante by claiming Barton had been elbowed.

Fair enough, but in fairness, having bin stamped on earlier, Barton and Newcastle had every reason to be peed off.
It was the Arsenal players who should be under scrutiny far more than Barton.

Well, I used it in the context of Barton being the kind of person who speaks his mind, and does not in any way hide behind others or his club etc, and tells it as he sees it. I think he's bin very honest indeed about himself recently.
Yes, he blotted his page with some of his antics on Saturday, but he was far from being the worst offender on the pitch.
Why aren't people screaming about the disgusting violent act by Song? Proper out of order. Player deserves at least a 3-game ban* for that.

Gervinho was dismissed on his Gunners debut for slapping Barton, who was booked for dragging him to his feet.
Barton said on BBC Radio 5 live's 606 programme: "I'm not proud of the way I reacted. I did go down easily.
"I shouldn't have lifted Gervinho up by his shirt and that's not the correct thing to do."
Barton was criticised for his part in the Ivory Coast striker being shown a straight red card by referee Pete Walton.
But the former Manchester City midfielder insists Walton made the right call in not awarding a penalty.
He added: "The stadium was full, the fans have grafted all week to pay to come and see us and I felt Gervinho was seeking to gain an unfair advantage and cheat us out of a point.
"He was already on his way down and I don't think it was a penalty. There was minimal contact but he was looking for it.
"At the end of the season that point could be the difference between Newcastle getting into Europe or not, or staying in the league or not.
"I've been hit harder by people at school but that doesn't make what he did right or wrong.
"The last thing we need as a football club, I need as a player and Arsenal need is for this to drag on. The Football Association and officials are normally bang on and I've no doubt that if there are any further repercussions they will get to the bottom of it."

It's a mark of just how repellent most people find Barton isn't it? This is a man responsible for at least three criminal assaults including two on his own team-mates. He's a serial cheat. A wind-up merchant and has the sort of anger-management issues that would see him barred from most professions.
That doesn't make what Song did in any way right, but it probably explains why most people aren't that concerned about Barton's personal safety.

Issues which he has accepted are part of who he is, and is trying to address. Read I think it was Warton's posts earlier, as he seems to have a lot more insight than any of us.

Because players deliberately target him to get a reaction, quite frankly. There was a feature on a Newcastle v Wolves game last season on Footy Focus I think; Barton was getting kicked and fouled left right and centre. He showed remarkable restraint to not retaliate actually.
As someone with a pretty good understanding of anger and violence issues, I think the bloke should be given a break tbh. He's nowhere near as bad as he used to be, and increased intense media focus on him isn't helping matters.
What about Song's disgusting actions then? Why can't we talk about that?

Sigh. Sorry, I only just checked this and now I guess I'm gonna have to answer Elfin.
Yeah, Song should have gone for that, and should get a retrospective ban. As far as I can remember it's the first time he's done that, but he does have a habit of picking up stupid yellows for tackles on the half way line.
For the record though, this does not excuse Barton in any way. For people to say that that wound him up and that's why he went after Gervinho makes it worse, because it shows that he is completely unable of controlling his temper.
And what do I realistically expect? To beat Liverpool home and away.
Honestly though, I'm more than a little worried. My prediction is City, United, Chelsea. 4th place will be between Arsenal and Liverpool.
