As per title – this place (http://www.convertape.com/protection-tape-168-p.asp) sells it at £5 per metre which seems v. reasonable if it’s the pukka stuff.

I really don’t get helicopter tape. If you love the finish of your shiny bike that much, then why cover it in sticky plastic? Otherwise just ride it and let the battle scars show. I like to keep my bikes in good nick, but could never be so anal as to cover it in clear sticky tape.

I have a riding associate who covers his Whyte in black insulation tape – wtf????????

I’ve bought from two different places but the stuff i got from justridingalong was much better quality. As usual it seems you get what you pay for..

    IMO , no !

I reckon the 3M gear is the best as the tape sticks really well and does not go “cloudy” with UV damage.

As above , you get what you pay for 🙄

It’s on e-bay really cheaply as well. The point is it is clear so that you can’t notice you have tape on but it preserves the frame from scratches and stuff a tad longer. The paint jobs on Giants are shite and if you have a few major crashes your bike can end up looking cr** after 1 year or so!!

I’ve used some ‘thick’ 3M equivalent off ebay (not for sale anymore) which was better than the 3M stuff I use now. It was really thick and would take a serious beating.

Heli tape is mainly useful for DH bikes that get rammed into the back of lorries for uplift. Without tape on some critical areas you can end up with quite impressive scrapes deep into the alloy frame from a single days riding.

On an xc bike you only really ‘need’ it where you’d get cable rub and on the downtube, so it’s barely noticeable.

Trident racing in Silverstone do it for very little £. Google and give them a ring 🙂

The stuff on Becca’s bike has been there 3 years, no clouding, no scrapes and only coming away at one corner where the bike rack caught it.

I use the Biketart stuff as it stops the cable wear gtting through paint, and into frame (yes, some of us keep bikes that long…), I also use it on car boot edges to protect from the bike rack, bonnet edge to protect from the rope from my open canoe when on the roof. Keeps the car looking nicer for longer (for resale – maybe), but for the bike its purely to slow down damage…

The bike tart stuff is nice and thick, but does ‘whiten’ very slightly (mines been on the car, outside for about 6-8mths, it must be UV damage.)

I have to say thanks for that, I read this a few weeks ago and bought some. It's fantastic, like some of you others I have used the bike tart stuff and it did whiten which I have been advised is due to it being an indoor version which has no UV resistance!

Anyway, anyone wanting to try out convertape.com please feel free to the discount code I received for there site. It's inv10 (this gives a 10% discount on your order).

My Carbon Merida is covered in tape, mainly headtube, downtube, BB, rear stays etc.
