Anybody know whats wrong with my car ? I was driving it out in Switzerland when there was a pop and then a load of smoke then a loss of power ,the garage said engine is gone ?it did start up again after but was smoking

If it's still running and well down on power it's probably blown the turbo, hang onto yor wallet!

turbo blown, turbo's are about 900 then you need to add fitting, cleaning all the bits out the engine, THEN add on costs of the damage you did restarting the engine (which will have caused all the bits of the turbo to drop into the head/cylinders and fooked all the inside of the block up)..:(
when a turbo goes pop like that it fires all the bits left down the intercooler which leads into the engine. if these bits have got in the engine (i.e. restarting it once the turbo has blown) your bill will be eye watering... new engine would be cheaper at that point..
i REALLY hope the turbo going pop hasn't thrown itself into your engine..Posted 2 years ago # -
Could be the input or output pipe to/from the turbo has let go. This would result in loss of power and smoking as the engine's tuned to operate with the turbo and intercooler both working.
Which TDCi engine is it?
EDIT. This shouldn't bee too bad to fix if it's just a new pipe that's required.

in the uk and a normal turbo blown.. 1.2k
if you've scored the cylinders or anything else ohh dear... new engine... hmm 4k as a guess for that...if it's a blown boost pipe you could be lucky, but most common on that car is blown turbo. (VW/seat/etc more common to blow a boost pipe) those things are 50-80 then they go.

agree with wombat but most common issue we see is a blown turbo on those things. They rarely let go of a boost pipe.
our mech's went 4 weeks ago.. 75k mondeo pottering up to a junction, POP, BANG, smoke and shards of turbo fins in the intercooler.

Surely what is most likely depends on which engine it is? The focus uses 3 different TDCi engines (With the 1.8 being a much older design than the 1.6 + 2.0). The 1.6 and 1.8 at least use a selection of different turbos too, I think.
I had an inlet pipe pop off mine a while back with a large bang. Only required re-fitting the connector however.

the 2L is highly common for it yes.. the 1.8 less so (as it runs lower pressure on the turbo)
i really hope for you its a boost pipe as they are cheap to sort out...

its a 2003 1.8 tdci 115 bhp ,when the mechanic restarted it at road side it ran o.k then the revs stuck on and he had to stall it to cut out engine as it wouldnt turn off with the ignition .

Slight hijack but still Focus turbo related...I think
I had a 2005 1.6 tdci that used to kind of moan (!?) a few seconds after you turned off the ignition. Now I have a 2006 1.8 tdci which doesn't do this. How come?

We're going to buy our first car soon (when one of us passes our test lol!) and Focus is top of the pile at the moment. TDCI... that's only going to be *some* models right? Because one of the reasons I thought it would be a good idea was cheap spares etc.

Hmm, sounds like the engine might be feeding on oil due to a blown turbo bearing seal.

MatF - are you sure it wasn't just the radiator fan staying on for a short while after you turned off the ignition?

glenh - no everything went completely quiet for a good few seconds, sometimes up to half a minute. Then the thing would just groan, almost like something discharging. I always assumed it was something to do with the turbo.

I have a 2006 2.0 TDCi focus which makes a slight whirring noise for a few seconds after the engine's turned off. I asked my local dealer about it and he said it was normal on the 2.0 and 1.6 as these were the newer engines, can't remember what it was that made the noise though.
I've had it for 3 years and have 82k miles on it, I get around 53mpg and am very happy with it.

I heard that when the turbo blows parts of it can be thrown into the engine. Then from there they make their way through the throttle cable into your foot on their way to your heart...
